  • Where is the instructional video for learning how to use blocks to create a blog post? I’ve searched everywhere and can’t find it. Nor can I find out how to insert an image or a list. Nor can I understand why the toolbar sometimes disappears, and I can’t get it back. Nor can I find the permalink or the link to switch from editing mode to code. Nor can I understand why so many functions are hidden.

  • Some user documentation exists, but very little. There is a team working on it, though.
The interface is supposed to be intuitive, but I’m thinking everyone thinks a little differently.
If it’s too frustrating, install the Classic Editor plugin until the user documentation is available.

Hi @ballroom16, I’m sorry your experience has been difficult. I don’t know the reasons for all the changes but hopefully can provide a few things to help.

Where is the instructional video for learning how to use blocks to create a blog post?

I don’t believe there is an official video, but this video appears to be a pretty good overview of the new block editor and how to insert and configure blocks. It covers images and shows a menu you can use to insert other types of blocks, including lists.

Note: The user interface has changed a little since this video was made, but it still looks like a good intro.

Nor can I understand why the toolbar sometimes disappears, and I can’t get it back.

Are you referring to the toolbar that is shown above each block? If so, I think it is being hidden while you type so it doesn’t obscure your content. It is shown again when you move your mouse cursor.

Nor can I find the permalink or the link to switch from editing mode to code.

Here is a brief recording that shows editing the permalink slug:

Regarding the switching from visual editor to code, it is possible with the block editor, but when editing the code, it is good to be careful not to break the HTML for blocks or there may be issues to resolve after switching back to the visual editor. Here is a brief recording showing how to switch to the code editor:

    Does this help?

    It does – and thanks.

The disappearing toolbar happened when I saved my work and left. When I opened up the post to do more editing, there was no toolbar. None at all. I couldn’t center anything. I couldn’t use colors.

Why are they so stingy with help? I spent 40 minutes clicking around looking for a way to post an image. I accidentally posted on the white, empty space, and a little box came up. I clicked it, and – voila – I could post an image?

I hope you can talk to whoever set up the interface and say – for heaven’s sake – provide some clues. Even a couple of bread crumbs for Hansel and Gretel to follow would be helpful.

Thanks for letting me unload. It has been frustrating. I appreciate the prompt and friendly reply!

I went to the list of plugins. There’s no classic plugin listed.
I Googled “wordpress classic editor.” It said go to Settings. Go to Writing. Choose go back to classic editor. Nope. There’s no box there to check.
I can’t get the toolbar to show. The video doesn’t show how to choose the typeface I want (I use Georgia.) The toolbar I get has only a few choices (show codes, left, center, right justify, etc.)
Did anyone test this interface with some real people before they issued it? Why the big rush?
I use WordPress for my business. Instead of putting up new posts, I’m fighting to get the interface to work.
Merry Christmas. Boy, what a great gift you’ve given me. My business is going to tank. Happy New Year!

If you want the Classic Editor, then it’s described in detail, and linked to, on the WordPress about page. The one you got when you updated to 5.0.

On your own site, in the wp-admin, click on the W icon in the upper left corner. That will take you to the about page on your site. Scroll to the bottom for the description of the Classic Editor plugin, and a link to install it.

In some versions, on the same about page, there’s a link at the very top that says “Learn how to keep using the old editor.” Click that if you see it.

I can’t get the toolbar to show.

Click on the block you are wanting to edit, and the toolbar shows up just above the block. Alternatively, you can set the toolbar to always be at the top of the screen, if you prefer that.

The video doesn’t show how to choose the typeface I want (I use Georgia.)

WordPress does not have font selection. It didn’t have that in the old editor either. If you used a plugin to add that, then you will need to find a new plugin to add it to the new interface.

The toolbar I get has only a few choices (show codes, left, center, right justify, etc.)

Correct, it only shows the icons that are relevant for the current block you’re in. Different blocks will have different toolbars. A paragraph doesn’t need things like header selection, an image doesn’t need things like font choices. That sort of thing. There’s about 90-ish blocks, they’re all different and suited for purpose.

Did anyone test this interface with some real people before they issued it?

The new editor is the most tested piece of WordPress, of all time. Millions of posts made using it, over many months, and several hundred thousand users.

I downloaded “classic editor.” It went to downloads. Now what?
I found a link that says “Advanced.” Maybe that’s where the typefaces are. But all it talks about is RSS.
    I’m sorry. I don’t have a degree in technology.
I was really looking forward to getting some blogging down during Christmas and New Year’s week. Geez. I’ve been happily using WordPress for eight years. I taught myself how to blog just by looking at the screen on the original version.

It’s a plugin. You’ve installed plugins before, right? Install it the same way you installed every other plugin you have ever installed.

Or, alternatively, you can just use the new editor. It’s great for blogging, according to half the people complaining about it. I do find it amusing that people who complain about the new editor either say that it is only good for bloggers or that it’s only good for people who want page editors. The divide seems to be about 50/50 so far.

If you have specific issues, then I’m happy to address those directly.

Maybe that’s where the typefaces are.

There aren’t any fonts in the WordPress core itself. You have a plugin adding those, and you may need to update that plugin.

Here’s what I ended up doing. I reinstalled the update. I had a hunch that I would get a message that I could go back to the previous version. Yes! (Of course nobody at this forum could have suggested that. Too easy.)
The old version is not as intuitive as the new one. Everything is laid out in front of you. The toolbar just sits there – no disappearing act. How boring. (I’m being sarcastic.)
I understand the new, easy, intuitive version with the disappearing toolbar and white spaces and mysterious icons is going to be required in 2021. I’m hoping that I’ll be dead by then and won’t have to struggle with it.
