For this reason alone, the device is useless to me. My plan was to use it to livestream on YouTube. But I don't want all my viewers seeing an autofocus box following my face around the whole time. And I can't disable autofocus because I am a one-man shop making YouTube videos at home.
2) There is different option (without needing this Cam Link device at all!!) to run video from your DSLR to your computer (in my case laptop) in order to live stream on YouTube. At least for Mac it's called "Camera Live" and it's free software. You need a USB cable to connect your camera to your laptop. Then I use OBS to stream the video. It works fine... EXCEPT that while live streaming the fan on my laptop was spinning like crazy, because I suppose this whole operation is very CPU intensive.
I thought that perhaps getting this Elgato Cam Link 4k device would somehow offload the necessary computing to the device itself.... so that my laptop wouldn't spin the fan so crazy fast during the live stream (which is also recorded in the audio). BUT.... THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Yeah, the Cam Link 4k device itself was getting rather warm/hot.... but my laptop fan STILL started spinning up like crazy. (And I have a fast MacBook Pro.) Sooo... the moral of the story.... just stick with a USB cable & Camera Live software like I mentioned earlier... you can actually get a completely clean video output WITHOUT any Heads Up Display on-screen menu items showing... and your laptop cpu fan is going to go crazy anyway, no matter what you do.
No need to buy this device! Save your money.
Additionally I contacted Elgato's customer support to ask about a refund and they said NO. Not willing to help me out. Even though their website table of compatible cameras was (in my opinion) quite misleading and almost false advertising. If you have a different DSLR that can provide clean HDMI out, then the number 1 issue I described above will not be a problem for you.
The reason I chose the CamLink is because a couple friends I have who stream also use this device, so I figured this would be the best option since they know way more than I do about what the best hardware is specifically for streaming.
It’s genuinely just plug and play. I had no issues with making it work with my Nikon. HOWEVER, I’ve flashed custom firmware onto my Nikon D5200 that bypasses the auto shutoff timer. If you’re not comfortable with modding your camera (assuming there’s modded firmware that can bypass your camera’s auto shutoff feature), I would find a different camera that natively has the option to disable auto shutoff if cost isn’t an issue.
Integration with SLOBS (StreamLabs OBS) is fantastic. I can use the CamLink 4K alongside my Elgato 4k60 PRO with zero issues. I can also switch between PC and console game scenes and the CamLink is not affected and doesn’t lag.
All in all, I have zero complaints about the Elgato CamLink 4k, and I would recommend this product to a friend.

It’s sad...Elgato is a company I’ve been buying products from for years, but not likely anymore. After purchasing the Cam Link 4K on the advice of a consultant, I was expecting their consistent quality that I’ve enjoyed in their other products, like EyeTV, which I’ve been using for years.
This product isn’t even close to their standard. Its big problem is that it consistently overheats and the feed from my camera goes black. Not a good thing to happen during a live event. Happened regularly.
So, I returned it for a replacement, thinking I just got a bad one. But the second one did the exact same thing. Failed consistently right out of the box. And I don’t need 4K. 1080p is fine for me. I’m not sure I know any of my peers who do, since we’re all sending video streams to web services that can barely deliver 720p - so the Pengo HDMI capture device is perfect, at 1/3 the cost and no need for a USB 3 to USB C adapter, either plugs right into my Mac Mini. After the back-to-back Cam Link 4K failures, I can’t help but touch the Pengo every so often to see if it’s warm, and it’s always cool as a cucumber. I’ve been using it for over 5 months, not a single glitch.
If you have a 100% compatible camera but are having issues capturing the video you may have an overloaded USB channel and need to remove other devices or buy a dedicated USB PCIE card.

My first one would work perfectly (with a canon 5DIV) but then started to randomly drop signal without any warning or indication. Meaning whilst streaming, suddenly the cam went black yet you don't realise (i use streamelements). This also happened in SLOBS too. I had to switch on / off the camera several times until it eventually came back. Then a new phenomenon started to appear. The screen would work and stay on, but all of a sudden the hue/colour would turn green and purple, making me look a skinny hulk! Again, funny initially, but annoying. I would have to power cycle the camera and restart OBS. Not good mid stream. Then the drop outs got worse and worse. I was dealing wiht Elgato for months on end, they could recreate the issue with the green/purple hue, and their workaround was to play with the colour sliders in the software. This did not solve the issue at all. In fact it's been more than 3months and it still happens.
Eventually I relented and sent it back to amazon, and bought another one (I really wanted this camlink to work). Now I get no dropouts, but continuous green/purple hues. If that's not enough, it freezes now in OBS.
Checked the hdmi out put from my canon, it works fine. It's a shame, when it worked, the 5DIV was perfect, with good glass. For now though, Logitech C922. Works all day every day.
I don't have room in my build for a capture card unfortunately (ITX build in a Dan A4 case).

I connected it, i saw it, but it kept freezing after a few seconds to minute. I read up on the issue, it was something to do with USB 3.0 not having enough bandwidth or something. I moved it to other ports, worked longer, but still froze up.
I used a powered USB 3.0 Hub, same issues.
With more research, i found out you need a PCIe Card that gives you a USB 3.0 to use it.
This was not mentioned in the product site etc. I find this ridiculous that i need a special card to use this on my computer, which is not a low end PC at all.
I ended up connecting my DSLR to a Internal Capture card instead. I will keep the product to test on my Ultra Gaming PC and see if the same issue is there.
There was no other issue with this product and i just want this review to be a warning to anyone looking to buy this product, to have an internal or external card you can use, or to buy the PCIe USB 3.0 card to go in your computer.
