Compatibility with recent WP version?

    I’m looking for a very light-weight solution to incorporating social sharing buttons on my website, and I don’t care about displaying share counts. QuickShare looks really interesting, except for the fact that the plugin has not been updated for many years. All the files (code, icons etc.) are dated 9 December 2013.

    I was wondering if the developer, Nick Halsey @celloexpressions , could comment on the compatibility with the latest WordPress version (currently 5.3.2) and PHP version 7.3 (or 7.4)? Do you plan on updating the plugin in the near future, or is it officially abandoned? Your feedback would be of great help.

    Update:

    I took the chance and installed the plugin on my site running WordPress 5.3.2. The server is running PHP 7.3. Unfortunately, when accessing the plugin’s settings (both Design and Config), the CPU usage of the browser immediately spiked.

    I first noticed it when I heard my mac’s cooling fan spin up. The CPU temperature got higher than I’ve ever seen before. This is on a two-year old iMac 27-inch with good specs. The CPU usage and temperature went back to normal after exiting QuickShare’s settings menu.

    I also tested the plugin on another WordPress installation, this time accessing QuickShare’s settings on my 2012 MacBook Air (clean install of High Sierra, only standard macOS apps). It caused the same high CPU load (and extremely high CPU temperature).

    It’s a lightweight plugin, but it did cause a significant speed and grade decrease in Google’s PageSpeed Insights, which is focused on the mobile browsing experience. The results in GTmetrix only got slightly lower than without the plugin. Due to this and the unacceptable CPU hogging in the WordPress backend, I deactivated and deleted the plugin.

    Since all the code is from 2013, there might be outdated parts that don’t work well now in 2020. An update would be of interest, though.

    This plugin will not be updated moving forward as the block editor is introducing similar functionality in WordPress 5.4. However, it should continue to work and I would not expect the performance issues noted above to occur (and any issues as described may be limited to the settings page). I am still using this plugin on several sites and have not seen performance issues related to this plugin.
