But with the pandemic this was no longer an option, as restaurants, coffee houses and bars -- institutions that forever supported the sporadic employment reality of struggling artists -- shuttered, many for good.

For out of work artists the "fall back" was always bartending or waiting tables -- something I did for seven years in between acting gigs.

Hundreds of thousands of artists, craftsmen and technicians have been unemployed for a year, their lives devastated by the pandemic: Writers, Actors, Directors, Singers, Designers, Musicians, Administrators, Dancers, Teachers, Choreographers, Producers, Crew and Staff.

We are struggling to make a return, but with your help we hope to reopen sometime this year when it is safe to do so.

My theatre company, Lookingglass, is just one of thousands of theaters across the country that had to close its doors last March because of COVID -- just one day after we'd opened yet another world premiere production in Chicago.
