Pinocchio is a fictional character and the protagonist of the children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883) by Italian writer Carlo Collodi of Florence, Tuscany. Pinocchio was carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a Tuscan village. He was created as a wooden puppet but he dreams of becoming a real boy. He is notably characterized for his frequent tendency to lie, which causes his nose to grow.

Pinocchio is a cultural icon. He is one of the most reimagined characters in children's literature. The origin of the name Pinocchio is uncertain; it may be related to the word pino (pine), as the puppet is made of wood, in the diminutive Tuscan form pinocchio (hence equivalent to "little piney") – the author used Florentine dialect frequently in the book – and is also similar to Pino, a nickname for Giuseppe (the Italian form of Joseph), of which Geppetto (the name of Pinocchio's maker) is also a nickname (hence equivalent to "little Joey").

La fiaba che apre la raccolta è ‘La Gatta Cenerentola’ di Giambattista Basile, la fonte principale a cui si ispirò Charles Perrault per comporre la fiaba di Cenerentola; seguono le tre fiabe di Luigi Capuana ‘Topolino’, ‘Saltacavalla’ e ‘Spera di sole’. ‘Topolino’ è la storia di un bambino nato con il corpo di un topolino, che grazie alla perseveranza e alla sua coda magica cresce e riesce a sposare la Reginetta. ‘Saltacavalla’ è il racconto di un trovatello che restituisce il sorriso ai genitori adottivi e al Re che lo conduce con sé a palazzo. ‘Spera di sole’ racconta di una povera fornaia che si trasforma in una bellissima fanciulla e muta il carattere capriccioso e superbo del principe che la sposa. Il falegname toscano Geppetto crea un burattino vivente a partire da un ceppo di legno parlante e lo chiama Pinocchio. Il ragazzo non si comporta bene: non ascolta mai il padre, non mantiene mai le promesse e continua a mettersi nei guai. Insegue solo piacere e deve imparare a pensare agli altri, se vuole diventare una persona in carne e ossa. "Le avventure di Pinocchio" sono, ad oggi, il romanzo italiano più venduto di sempre. L'italiano Carlo Collodi (pseudonimo di Carlo Lorenzini, 1826-1890) fu un giornalista e scrittore di libri per bambini, che divenne famoso in tutto il mondo per il suo libro "Le avventure di Pinocchio" (1883). Collodi iniziò a scrivere testi di satira politica e in seguito passò alle fiabe. I suoi scritti si discostano dalla letteratura per bambini dell'epoca in quanto trattavano dei valori morali e furono apprezzati da adulti e bambini. Collodi non perse mai il suo tono satirico, queste storie quindi possono essere lette come allegorie. Nella versione originale di Pinocchio, il burattino di legno è impiccato per le sue azioni.

Il principe non voleva rinunciare e si presentò all’imperatore e a sua figlia travestito da guardiano dei porci. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) è stato uno scrittore, poeta e artista danese. È celebre la sua letteratura per bambini; tra le sue fiabe più amate si citano "I vestiti nuovi dell’imperatore", "La sirenetta", "L'usignuolo", "Il soldatino di stagno", "La regina delle nevi", "Il brutto anitroccolo" e "La piccola fiammiferaia". I suoi libri sono stati tradotti in tutte le lingue viventi del mondo e al giorno d’oggi non c’è bambino o adulto che non abbia avuto modo di conoscere gli estrosi personaggi di Andersen. Le sue fiabe sono state il soggetto di infiniti adattamenti per il teatro e per il cinema, soprattutto da parte della Disney con i film d’animazione "La sirenetta" del 1989 e "Frozen", liberamente tratto da "La regina delle nevi", del 2013. Grazie all’enorme contributo dato da Andersen alla letteratura per l’infanzia, nel 2 aprile, giorno del suo compleanno, si celebra la Giornata internazionale del libro per bambini.
