Use audio to create YouTube Shorts

Shorts is still in beta. Everyone can watch Shorts and create them with YouTube’s short-form video creation tools available globally in the YouTube app – Learn more.

YouTube Shorts are vertical videos that are 60 seconds or less. Shorts make it possible for any creator to connect with our billions of viewers to grow a new audience.

Our Shorts creation tools let you create Shorts by sampling music from official music videos or original audio from videos across YouTube. Get creative and use this feature to show your unique spin on the content you love to watch!

Shorts you make with sampled audio are attributed back to the source creator’s original video. Tap sound  to see a link to the source creator’s original video and a page of all other Shorts using the same audio – a great opportunity for new viewers to discover your content.

Learn more about sampling content

What content can I use to create a Short?
You can create a Short using a song from our music library or the original audio from many other short and long-form videos. Shorts made with sampled audio are attributed back to the source creator’s original video.
Some videos may be unavailable based on who has claimed copyright ownership or their privacy setting. For example, videos claimed by a third-party copyright owner and private videos can’t be used. We also allow creators to limit the use of audio from their long-form videos in other’s Shorts.
If you choose to use audio from others’ videos, the owner may delete their original content or restrict the use of their long-form content in Shorts at any time. When this happens, any derivative Shorts will be audio muted, unlisted, and scheduled for deletion in 30 days. Don’t worry – we’ll email you a reminder before your Short is deleted, so you can download a version that doesn’t include the audio.
Can I restrict the use of my content in others’ short videos?
You can limit audio sampling from your long-form videos by editing Shorts permissions in YouTube Studio or when you upload from your computer. You can’t opt out Shorts from audio sampling.
You may choose to restrict the use of your long-form videos or delete your original content at any time. Doing so will mute audio, unlist, and schedule any derivative Shorts for permanent deletion in 30 days. The creators of those derivative videos will be notified, so they can download their original video without your audio.
