WordPress Events

The goal of WordPress community events is to connect WordPress enthusiasts to each other, to inspire everyone to do more with WordPress, and to encourage people to contribute back to the WordPress Open SourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Local WordPress Meetup

MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. are the groups that power year-round local WordPress communities. The WordPress chapter program with meetup.com provides central account management for official groups. Organize a local group, or an event series within a group to bring together WordPress enthusiasts in your area. Local Meetups are encouraged to have as many organizers as possible, in the hopes that they meet at least once a month.

WordCamps

WordCamps are the annual WordPress events organized by local communities. The WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. do_action hackathons are community-organized events focused on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Each do_action event includes participants from the local WordPress community coming together to plan and build brand new websites for a number of local organizations.

Introduction to Open Source workshops

The goal of this workshop series is to highlight the potential of open source software in regions where there is less participation in OSS projects. These workshops spread knowledge and understanding of the open web and open source through two-hour training events, staffed and organized by local communities. They are financially supported by the WordPress FoundationWordPress Foundation The WordPress Foundation is a charitable organization founded by Matt Mullenweg to further the mission of the WordPress open source project: to democratize publishing through Open Source, GPL software. Learn WordPress

Learn WordPress is an online resource that offers free educational content for anyone interested in learning how to publish with, build for, and contribute to WordPress. It hosts many workshops, courses, and lesson plans so that anyone, from beginners to experts, can learn to do more with WordPress. You can search for and watch workshops at https://learn.wordpress.org/ at any time. People who are interested in connecting and learning with others over a workshop can participate in Discussion Groups, or use the Lesson Plans to facilitate presenting the content at their own educational events. Learn is a cross-team initiative that is currently managed by the Training Team, but the Community Team also contributes content (workshops, discussion groups, courses etc) to the project.

1. Create a Workshop. Workshops can be on any topic related to WordPress, can be for any level of experience, and in any language. To get started, submit your workshop idea.
2. Facilitate a Discussion Group. To learn more about discussion group facilitators, read this post. You can apply to become a discussion group facilitator here, or you can even organize a discussion group for your local WordPress meetup.
3. Update and contribute to Lesson Plans. Lesson Plans provide an outline and complete script for anyone wanting to run their own classes at in-person or virtual events. You can even use these lesson plans for the Workshops that you submit! The Training team meets Fridays at 11:00 UTC and Tuesdays at 17:00 UTC weekly in #training channel in Slack. 4. Join the Training Team. The Team currently meets every Tuesday at 16:00 UTC and every Friday at 11:00 UTC on the #training channel in Slack.

WordCamp MentorMentor Someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. Program

WordCamp mentors are a team of volunteers who have experience organizing WordCamps and want to help other organizers have a great time planning a WordCamp. As a mentor, your job is the same as every deputyDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Time Commitment: Flexible, anywhere from 2 hours up to 10+ hours per month, depending on how many WordCamps you would like to mentor.

Community deputiesDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about deputies in our Community Deputy Handbook. are a team of volunteers from all over the world who respond to incoming requests to join the meetup chapter program. This includes vetting meetup applications, interviewing applicants, running organizer orientations, checking for existing groups, and chapter setup on meetup.com if approved. Deputies perform similar duties for WordCamp applications, as well as handling swag shipments for organizers. Additional Deputy tasks include supporting and advising sponsors, supporting and responding to organizer questions in the #community-team Slack channel (join the Making WordPress Slack instance), and generally keeping things moving at WordCamp Central. Experience Required: Deputies are expected to have been a part of organizing a local WordCamp or Meetup, and to have some familiarity with the WordPress community. Good search skills (to check for poorly indexed groups not on meetup.com, as well as to vet applicants), good written communication skills, friendly and welcoming attitude. The WordPress community primarily communicates in English, but we warmly welcome Deputies who can help in other languages.
Time Commitment: Flexible, about an hour or two per week.

Community Working Groups

Diverse Speaker Training Working Group

The Diverse Speaker Training Working Group (#WPDiversity) is led by @jillbinder. This group supports meetups and WordPress events to run a workshop that will help increase the number of speaker applications from people from marginalized and underrepresented groups. During the pandemic, the group is running the workshop directly to the marginalized and underrepresented voices in the global WordPress community monthly.

Experience Required: A strong desire to bring more diverse voices into WordPress events. No prior experience required, but a willingness to share ideas, collaborate, and to help define and tackle tasks is warmly welcome. Good communication skills and reliability.
Time Commitment: Flexible, anywhere from 1 hour up to 5+ hours per month, depending on the role.

Youth Event Working Group

The Youth Event Working Group is led by @sunsand187 and works together to provide resources to event organizers of kids based events. The group has created and updates the handbook as well as providing guidance to new organizers via written documentation.

Learn WordPress Working Group

The Learn WordPress Working Group is led by @hlashbrooke. Learn WordPress is a learning platform for WordPress users, builders, and contributors. The site focuses on three primary areas: video workshops, live discussion groups, and lesson plans. The working group handles the maintenance of the site, as well decisions around features and long-term goals for the platform.

Volunteers Needed: Yes – workshop presenters, discussion group facilitators, and lesson plan maintainers
Experience Required: No experience required, but a familiarity with the content of the workshop, group or lesson plan is helpful.
Time Commitment: Varies based on role. Anything from 1 – 10 hours a month, depending on how you want to be involved.

Contributors Working Group

The Contributors Working Group (#WPContributors) is led by Christina Workman. This group is working towards creating a comprehensive, centralized location for all Contributor information that will help encourage all Contributors and Contributor Event Planners.

Volunteers Needed: Yes! This working group launched in October 2020, and needs your help.
Experience Required: No experience required. This group benefits from a variety of experiences with both contributing and with using WordPress itself.
Time Commitment: 1-5 hours per month, depending on how you want to be involved.
