Nevada had the highest unemployment rate in August 2021, at 7.7 percent, followed by California (7.5 percent) and New York, (7.4 percent). Nebraska had the lowest jobless rate, 2.2 percent, a new low. (All state data begin in 1976.)

From August 2020 to August 2021, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 49 states and the District of Columbia, while employment in Wyoming was essentially unchanged.

Employer costs for employee compensation for private industry workers averaged $36.64 per hour worked in June 2021. Wage and salary costs averaged $25.89 and accounted for 70.6 percent of employer costs, while benefit costs averaged $10.76 and accounted for 29.4 percent.

Total U.S. employment is projected to grow from 153.5 million to 165.4 million from 2020 to 2030, an increase of 11.9 million jobs, or 7.7 percent. Excluding a projected increase of 9.3 million jobs attributed to the COVID–19 recovery from low base-year employment for 2020 and its associated recession, employment is projected to increase by 1.7 percent.

There were 410 fatal workplace injuries in the private crop production and animal production and aquaculture industries in 2019. These deaths accounted for 7.7 percent of the 5,333 workplace deaths in all industries in 2019.
