Apply for an educator or researcher discount

If you're an educator or a researcher, you can apply to receive GitHub Team for your organization account for free.

About educator and researcher discounts

Before applying for an individual discount, check if your learning community is already partnered with us as a GitHub Campus Program school. For more information, see "About GitHub Campus Program."

To apply for an educator or researcher discount, you must meet the following requirements.

  • Be an educator, faculty member, or researcher.
  • Have a verifiable school-issued email address.
  • Upload documents that prove your school affiliation.
  • Have a user account on GitHub.

Applying for an educator or researcher discount

  1. Go to GitHub Education and, in the top right, click Get benefits.

  2. Under "Individuals", click Get teacher benefits. "Get teacher benefits" on GitHub Education homepage

  3. Select or add the email address you use for school. Select the email address

    Tip: Selecting a school-issued email address, if you have one, gives you the best chance of a speedy review.

  4. If prompted, upload proof of your academic status.

    • Click Use your camera to take a picture. Button to use your camera to take a picture

    • Optionally, to change the camera you want to use, use the camera drop-down menu. Camera drop-down menu

    • Place your valid academic ID or other proof of current academic status in the frame, then click Take photo. Take photo button

    • If you can't take a picture of your proof of academic status, to upload an image from your computer instead, click Upload image. Upload image link

      Note: PDF files are not supported, and you cannot upload them as proof of academic status.

  5. Enter your school's name. Field for your school name

  6. Describe how you plan to use GitHub. Description field for how you plan to use GitHub

  7. Verify your application details, then click Submit your information. Submit your information button

    If your application is approved, you'll receive a confirmation email. Applications are usually processed within a few days, but it may take longer during peak times, such as during the start of a new semester.

Upgrading your organization

After your request for an educator or researcher discount has been approved, you can upgrade the organizations you use with your learning community to GitHub Team, which allows unlimited users and private repositories with full features, for free. You can upgrade an existing organization or create a new organization to upgrade.

Upgrading an existing organization

  1. Go to "Upgrade your organization" on the Organization Upgrades page.
  2. Next to the organization you want to upgrade, click Upgrade. Upgrade button

Upgrading a new organization

  1. Go to "Upgrade your organization" on the Organization Upgrades page.
  2. Click Create an organization. Create an organization button
  3. Read the information, then click Create organization. Create organization button
  4. Under "Choose your plan", click Choose GitHub Free.
  5. Follow the prompts to create your organization.
  6. Go to "Upgrade your organization" on the Organization Upgrades page.
  7. Next to the organization you want to upgrade, click Upgrade. Upgrade button
