Father, son, House of Gucci.

[ techno music]

[ soft instrumental music]

Welcome back to Good Morning Vogue. I'm Raven Smith,

and today I am hanging out

with the Oscar winning costume designer, Janty Yates.

She is the architect for the entire wardrobe

of the highly anticipated film, House of Gucci,

and I am super excited about this because

Janty has offered to take me to the private archives

where she sourced Miss Lady Gaga's clothes.

But first things first,

it's London, it's the morning,

we're going to have a coffee.

[upbeat music]

Janty, Hello!

I'm so glad you could join me here today.

You've worked on like some phenomenal films.

You won an Oscar for Gladiator.

Well, that was my first job with Ridley.

Why he chose me, I still, to this day, don't know,

but I'm so grateful.

Tell me a bit about how House of Gucci

came across your...

Front door.

Front door. [Janty giggles]

How did it appear?

Giannina, Lady Scott, had had the project for nearly,

she says 20 years.

Oh really?

she had been friends with the Gucci's

and I've just pestered her.

It's a huge drama,

it's a real life event.

And everyone knew about Gianni Versace's death,

but nobody knew about Maurizio Gucci's death.

[Raven] I assume that Gucci clothes from that era

are not that easy to come by.

[Janty] Well they're not that brilliant,

[Raven] to be honest Oh yeah.

[Janty] Maurizio's designs were round and brown.

[laughing]

And then Tom came along, Tom Ford came along, and just

Cut through that- Changed the game

with a swathe.

Yeah. you know, amazing.

Patrizia Gucci was quite extreme in her look anyway,

but more with the jewels.

She'd wear two or three necklaces.

Yeah.

She'd have something possibly in her hair.

A lot going on, You know,

She'd be Christmas treed up

Oh yeah.

[Janty] So we did that with LG. She had 54 script days.

She was not going to repeat anything.

[Raven] No

[Janty] Not even an earring.

Good on her. [laughs]

Fantastic. So we had

enormous sways of jewelry.

Yeah

We had Bulgari and Boucheron for the bigger pieces.

But most of it was costume.

And she would just say,

well I wouldn't wear that brooch.

Maybe I'd have big chunky bracelets

to meet Dominic de Sole-

Yeah. Because I'm in a

aggressive mood.

So she would think things through to the Nth degree.

She was a wonderful collaborator.

So just tell me as the character arc develops,

what is the relationship with the costume as well?

She went from being very young.

When she's seducing Maurizio,

we had her in little cashmere jumpers, and little skirts.

[Raven] Yeah

[Janty] To going full sequinned, halter-neck,

long dresses and glorious shoes and drenched in jewelry,

[Raven] of course. Yeah.

And then towards the end,

when she and Maurizio split up,

then she gets a little stronger.

She goes into leather jackets

and we were running around Rome, finding vintage jeans.

[Raven] Great. Something I'd never

[Raven] considered- Yeah.

[Janty] for Patrizia.

Yeah. But, LG was quite adamant

that she wanted to get butched up.

A bit more bouchey.

[laughs]

Boucheyed up.

Boucheyed up.

[laughs]

Basically She said she wants to be like her mother.

She has an Italian mother who was a very elegant woman,

and she said she wanted to dress like that.

And actually,

knowing how Lady Gaga dresses.

[Raven] Yeah.

I was kind of relieved to hear that. [Laughs]

Yeah, Yeah. I mean,

I would never think of lady Gaga dressing like her mom.

You know exactly,

but that was terrific.

I know that you sourced some of the costume in Rome,

because it's quite difficult to source.

We were approached by,

they used to be William Vintage, who I'm sure you know,

and they're now called Out of the Ordinary.

But they really do have wonderful, wonderful

top dollar

vintage.

So we're going to go there now.

[Raven] Great.

[Janty] And I'm going to show you what they've got now.

[Raven] We're gonna see some LG costume

[Janty] and it's, and It's finest... And some LG rejects.

[boisterous laughter]

So I wondered if you wanted to just try

from their vintage collection.

Maybe this suit, which is a glorious mohair.

Yeah very Gucci air. And we'll [indistinct].

Love that.

[Janty] Raven, how are you getting on?

[Janty] I'm good. Oh, look at you!

[Raven] It's fantastic.

[Janty] Okay,

and I'm gonna just... [Raven laughs]

Perfect. Perfect length.

[Raven] Yep.

[Janty] Perfect Gucci shirt.

[Raven] Perfect, Gucci. Lets try the...

[Raven] Oh, feeling very Gucci air at the moment!

Hello Calum

Hi Janty, how are you?

How are you? How nice to see you again.

This is Raven Smith. Hi.

Hi. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you.

This is fantastic. This is heaven.

So this is our Eastern London showroom.

The majority of the pieces are 1990s.

Big favorites, obviously Tom Ford for Gucci,

that works very well for us.

We also have museum grade Alexander McQueen,

quite a bit of Gianni Versace,

and a mixture of other designers.

We basically, if we find a dress we love, we buy it.

Yeah, I can smell the luxury. This is fantastic.

Let me take my coat off and let's do a raid.

Yes.

These were the costumes that Calum brought to me in Shepton.

[Raven] Yeah

[Janty] This, we loved. Lady Gaga Loved it.

There's a mini skirt underneath.

[Calum] Yeah, yeah. Yes, glorious.

And great pattern. Absolutely glorious.

[Raven] Versace I'm assuming?

Yeah. Sorted winter 91. I mean, it's incredible.

[Janty] Probably cooler than Chanel. Stand out.

[Raven] Well, debatable.

[all laugh]

I think that's up for the voters.

[Calum] Up for the voters.

[Janty] Then this, we did try on.

[Raven] Beautifully overpowering. Stunning!

And I think you possibly need to be

as tall as you to work.

Okay, fine, this is my next [indistinct],

and for my next look!

And this is very similar to where we went with

LG's closet.

I love that it's like

the loudness of an animal print

without it being full tiger, tiger.

Exactly, exactly.

This whole thing is giving me sort of like party season,

even though I know that Gaga in the film

is dressed for a party in every scene.

Well. [laughs] Or a lot of the scenes!

We actually had a red dress created.

It took six weeks- Yeah.

and toiled and everything.

Similar, but of course made to fit her.

[Raven] Yeah.

And we took her on set, it was a big party scene.

And Ridley went, what's going on here?

And he made us cut 18 inches.

Off the length?

And we were just

[Raven] snipping away. Brilliant.

Janty, thank you so much for having me here today.

Calum, thank you for showing us around.

My pleasure.

This fantastic amount of beautiful stock.

Well, before you go, I've got a surprise for you.

Just hold on there. Okay.

[Janty] One second.

[Raven] You can leave in this. Oh! Oh wow!

[Calum] Amazing.

That is stunning.

Oh my gosh.

That is a coat.

[Janty] Well the coat I designed for Jared Leto.

I just don't know where you wouldn't want to be seen

in a coat like this.

It's like, just....

you put the coat on, your mood's better,

and away you go.

[Janty] Here here.

[lively music]
