It’s been a minute since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit the road, but yesterday the royal couple arrived in Manhattan for their first joint trip to the city. Set to appear at the Global Citizen Live event Saturday at Central Park’s Great Lawn, they’ve used their time in New York to see the sights, support their favorite causes, and showcase their coordinated style. Thus far, the Duchess’ look has been forward-thinking; thanks to unseasonably warm temperatures, most people have yet to put their summer clothes back in storage, but Meghan Markle is already dressing for fall. Sleek outerwear has been the standout element in each of the looks she’s worn while traveling and her love of statement coats provides plenty of inspiration for the months to come.

At One World Trade Center’s Observatory on Thursday, Markle went monochromatic in navy pieces from Giorgio Armani. Her turtleneck and trousers were perfectly fitted, but it was the single-breasted overcoat she threw over them that tied it all together. The coat’s inverted collar, rich hue, and texture elevated it beyond your standard topper. Worn with suede pumps from Aquazzura and Jennifer Meyer’s golden bracelets, a diamond solitaire ring from Lorraine Schwartz, and a classic Cartier tank watch, it matched Prince Harry’s indigo suit and tie perfectly.

Later that day, the couple headed to the United Nations and met with the US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to discuss racial justice, mental health awareness, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The subject matter was serious, but as always, Markle’s fashion was on-point. Again a turtleneck anchored the look, but this time it was paired with a black skirt and worn beneath a cream-colored version of Max Mara’s Rispoli wool coat. To add to the understated but luxurious vibe, Markle added tortoiseshell sunglasses from Valentino and a mini bag from stealth wealth accessories brand, Valextra.

This morning in Harlem, the Sussexes stopped by PS 123 Mahalia Jackson to meet with students and read from Markle’s best-selling children’s book, The Bench. The relaxed nature of the event called for clothes that felt effortless, and in a vibrant red pantsuit with an oversized cape coat, Markle provided just that. Her Loro Piana set was as fashionable as the rest of her New York wardrobe, but a morning spent laughing and playing with kids allowed her to let her hair down and wear a design fit for the royal version of casual Friday.
