Netflix acquires Roald Dahl Story Company

Netflix said Wednesday that it's acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC), the UK-based company that owns and manages the rights of the storied works from the late British author Roald Dahl. Deal terms weren't disclosed.

Why it matters: It's likely one of Netflix's largest content acquisitions. Netflix typically licenses programming for its streaming service, instead of buying the rights outright.

Government Accountability Office hits media for lacking Latinos

Latinos are severely underrepresented in the media industry and have made few gains in film, television, or newsrooms since 2014, according to a preliminary U.S. Government Accountability Office report.

The big picture: The study by Congress's watchdog followed a request from U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), who has been speaking out about the lack of Hispanic staffers in media outlets and the stereotypes that persist from that exclusion.

Latino and Hispanic Americans are vastly neglected and poorly represented in popular films, according to a new report from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

Why it matters: The report, released on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, found that while Hispanic and Latino Americans have the highest per-capita theater attendance in the nation, they're rarely cast in lead roles in popular films.
