LOCAL INITIATIVES

With 13% of global emissions stemming from the transport sector alone, DHL fully embraces the mission to reduce its own carbon footprint through energy-savings initiatives across the United States, as well as to offer a portfolio of innovative, environmentally-responsible shipping options to customers to help them in their efforts to measure and offset their own carbon emissions.

  • Air fleet : DHL Express added six Boeing 767 Extended Range Freighter aircraft into its air fleet that will save up to one million liters of fuel and 3,150 tons of CO2 per year. DHL also announced an agreement with Southern Air to add three Boeing 777 freighters expected to burn 20-25% less fuel with a superior payload range, allowing more markets to be served non-stop. The first passenger-converted Airbus A300-600 was added to DHL Express’s fleet, with plans for 18 aircraft to be converted to freighters by mid-2013. The converted A300-600s can carry up to five tons more cargo, fly 900 kilometers farther, burn up to 20 percent less fuel and fly more quietly than their predecessors.

Green fleet : In 2011, DHL Express U.S. rolled out an all “green” fleet of 80 commercial delivery vehicles in Manhattan, our largest pickup and delivery facility in the U.S., to help reduce its impact on the city’s environment. As of October 1, 2011, DHL Express operates 30 American-made, battery-powered electric vans and 50 hybrid trucks in Manhattan that cut down fossil fuel use and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50 percent each year in comparison to conventional vehicles, helping the city’s goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

  • GOGREEN Carbon Neutral

DHL was the first logistics company to offer a carbon neutral shipping service –GOGREEN Carbon Neutral. For a service charge, DHL enables customers to offset their estimated CO2 emissions at an account and shipment level. These emissions are then offset by reinvesting in environmental protection projects verified by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Gold Standard (GS) or Voluntary Carbon Standards (VCS).

Customers who choose the GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service will receive an annual certificate issued in April, identifying the total amount of estimated carbon emissions from their GOGREEN shipments that will be neutralized in environmental protection projects for the prior year. This certificate can support their corporate sustainability mandates.

Ensuring accountability, our program is annually verified by an independent body – the Swiss based Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) – one of the few independent organizations accredited by the World Bank to verify environmental protection projects and adhere to high standards. SGS verifies DPDHL against the principles of ISO 14064, ensuring that enough of our verified carbon credits are retired each year to neutralize the CO2 footprint for GOGREEN shipments.

DPDHL purchases carbon credits for the environmental protection projects of the highest quality that have been verified by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Gold Standard (GS) or Voluntary Carbon Standards (VCS) with official registries. Therefore, DPDHL is not generating renewable energy credits or other green benefit.
