Speakers announced for the W3C Workshop on Wide Color Gamut and High Dynamic Range for the Web

chromaticity diagram of wide color gamut W3C announced today the speakers and live sessions of the virtual W3C Workshop on Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) for the Web.

  • HDR Introduction – Monday 13 September
  • WCG: CSS Color 4 – Tuesday 14 September
  • HDR: Compositing and tone mapping – Friday 17 September
  • WCG & HDR: Color creation and manipulation – Monday 20 September
  • WCG & HDR: Canvas, WebGL, WebGPU – Friday 24 September

The presentations are online, so they can be watched in your own time. Each talk has full closed-captions, and a transcript is also available. Live Q&A events for each session will be live-captioned, and you will be able to discuss with the speakers and other participants.

The event is free. Please register by 24 September.

The primary goal of the workshop is to bring together browser vendors, content creators, color scientists, and experts in other relevant areas (e.g. accessibility, scripting, security, web) to converge on technologies for enabling WCG and HDR on the Open Web Platform.

Upcoming: W3C/SMPTE Workshop on Professional Media Production on the Web

Timeline photo by Jacob Miller on UnsplashW3C announced today the joint W3C/SMPTE Workshop on Professional Media Production on the Web, which is being organized as a virtual event during SMPTE’s annual ATC event, 9-18 November 2021.

Professional media assets, including audio-visual masters for television and motion pictures, are increasingly being stored in the cloud. The workshop will connect the web platform and the professional media production communities and explore evolutions of the Web platform to address professional media production requirements, including:

  • Using Web technologies, like WebCodecs, WebGPU, and Web Audio for professional media production
  • Understand the unique performance and format requirements of professional media production workflows
  • Identify gaps in the web platform and standardization opportunities

This joint W3C/SMPTE event will be organized as a combination of pre-recorded talks followed by online discussions on GitHub, and culminating in a series of live sessions in November 2021.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit a proposal for a talk as soon as possible. Deadline for selected speakers to provide their recorded talks is 15 October 2021.

Workshop organizers are also interested in expanding diversity of the program committee to cover other perspectives and regional specificities. Please reach out to François Daoust <[email protected]> if you are interested.

The event is free and open to anyone with relevant perspectives on the topic, whether or not W3C/SMPTE members. Please register by 5 November 2021 to be notified of talks availability, of the forum set up to facilitate discussion among registered participants, and of the live sessions logistics. To make sure that live interactions can take place during live sessions, the Program Committee may restrict participation to live sessions based on information provided during registration.

First Public Working Draft: WebRTC Encoded Transform

The Web Real-Time Communications Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of WebRTC Encoded Transform. The goal of this work is to define an API for processing encoded media in WebRTC, for example for voice processing, background removal, dynamic control of codec parameters, etc. This document specifies an API surface for manipulating the bits on MediaStreamTracks being sent via an RTCPeerConnection.

First Public Working Draft: Incremental Font Transfer

The Web Fonts Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of Incremental Font Transfer. This specification defines two methods to incrementally transfer fonts from server to client. Incremental transfer allows clients to load only the portions of the font they actually need which speeds up font loads and reduces data transfer needed to load the fonts. A font can be loaded over multiple requests where each request incrementally adds additional data.

Working Group Note: XR Accessibility User Requirements

The Accessible Platform Architectures (APA) Working Group has published XR Accessibility User Requirements (XAUR) as a Working Group Note. XR refers to hardware, applications, and techniques used for virtual reality or immersive environments (VR), augmented or mixed reality (AR), and other related technologies. XAUR introduces technical accessibility challenges, such as the need for multi-modal support, synchronization of input and output devices, and customization. It describes accessibility user needs and suggests requirements. XAUR is for designers and developers involved in creating immersive and augmented experiences. It’s also useful for anyone who wants to better understand accessibility in a range of immersive or augmented environments.

First Public Working Draft: Secure Payment Confirmation (SPC)

The Web Payments Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of Secure Payment Confirmation (SPC). SPC helps to streamline authentication during a payment transaction. Leveraging Web Authentication, it is designed to scale authentication across merchants, to be used within a wide range of authentication protocols, and to produce cryptographic evidence that the user has confirmed transaction details.

First Public Working Drafts: WebXR Depth Sensing, Hit Test, DOM Overlays Modules

The Immersive Web Working Group has published the following three First Public Working Drafts:

  • WebXR Depth Sensing Module is a module extending the capabilities of WebXR Device API. It enables apps to obtain depth information computed by supported XR devices in order to provide more immersive experiences. The example use cases of depth sensing API include (but are not limited to) simulating physical interactions of virtual objects with the real world, occlusion, and non-visual applications that can make use of increased awareness of users’ environment.
  • WebXR Hit Test Module describes a method for performing hit tests against real world geometry to be used with the WebXR Device API.
  • WebXR DOM Overlays Module expands the WebXR Device API with a mechanism for showing interactive 2D web content during an immersive WebXR session. When the feature is enabled, the user agent will display the content of a single DOM element as a transparent-background 2D rectangle.

First Public Working Draft: CSS Nesting Module

The CSS Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of CSS Nesting Module. This module introduces the ability to nest one style rule inside another, with the selector of the child rule relative to the selector of the parent rule. This increases the modularity and maintainability of CSS stylesheets.
