Payroll employment rises by 235,000 in August; unemployment rate declines to 5.2%09/03/2021
Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 235,000 in August, and the unemployment rate declined
to 5.2 percent. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, transportation and
warehousing, private education, manufacturing, and other services. Retail trade lost jobs. Featured News Releases:
Union membership declines by 321,000 in 2020; union membership rate is 10.8%01/22/2021
The number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions declined by 321,000 to
14.3 million in 2020. The union membership rate was 10.8 percent, up by 0.5
percentage point from 2019, reflecting the much larger decline in employment
