The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 5.3 percent for the 12 months ending August 2021, a smaller increase than the 5.4-percent rise for the period ending July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 4.0 percent over the last 12 months, also a smaller increase than the period ending July. The energy index rose 25.0 percent over the last 12 months, and the food index increased 3.7 percent; both were larger than the increases for the 12-month period ending July.

The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 8.3 percent from August 2020 to August 2021, the largest over-the-year advance since 12-month changes were first calculated in November 2010. Prices for goods rose 12.6 percent over the year ended August 2021, while prices for services rose 6.4 percent.
