Help choosing a theme

Is there any guide anywhere that will help me filter through the thousands of theme choices to find one that will support the functions I want to include in my new site (no domain yet)? I’m in the process of migrating to WordPress from the linked site and want to have similar functionality but not necessarily the same look.
Is it better to find the plugins I want to use for my site, and then select a theme that will support those plugins? I understand it’s possible to make my own theme or edit an existing one, but I’m very new to WordPress (as well as LAMP servers) and I’m nowhere near that comfortable/confident yet.

While having thousands of themes to choose from is great, it is understandably overwhelming! Thankfully, it is quite easy to try various themes out till you find the right fit!
