Our team is based in Brussels, close to the European institutions, and at the heart of the digital and human rights environment.

Claire Fernandez

Executive Director

Claire is in charge of EDRi’s leadership, mission and strategy, financial sustainability and oversight, and the daily management of the operations. Before joining EDRi, she worked as the Deputy Director of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR), and prior to that as an independent human rights consultant, and as an adviser to the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, and represented the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Bosnia and Kosovo. She holds a Master degree in Human Rights from the Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg, France.

Policy

Chloé Berthélémy

Policy Advisor

Chloé leads EDRi’s policy work on law enforcement and data protection issues, including cross-border access to data at EU and Council of Europe levels, Europol, EU police and migration databases, and information exchange (“Prüm”, EURODAC). She also has expertise related to online freedom of expression and content
moderation in the context of the Terrorist Content Online Regulation. Before joining EDRi, she advocated for youth rights at the European level. In her free time, she is active in environmental and feminist social movements.

Sarah Chander

Senior Policy Advisor

Sarah leads EDRi's policy work on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and specifically the EU’s AI Regulation. She also works on issues of discrimination in a digital context, migration-related technologies, and works on a process of decolonising the digital rights field alongside the Digital Freedom Fund (DFF). She looks to make links between the digital and other social justice movements. Sarah has experience in racial and social justice and previously worked at the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) on a wide range of topics including anti-discrimination law and policy, intersectional justice, state racism, racial profiling and police brutality. She was actively involved in movements against immigration detention.

Ella Jakubowska

Policy Advisor

Ella leads EDRi's advocacy on biometric mass surveillance practices (such as public facial recognition) used by law enforcement agencies, government authorities and private actors. She contributes to the team’s work on artificial intelligence and anti-discrimination, with a keen interest in issues of power, justice, the construction ofcriminality, and how biometric technologies threaten rights to equality and non-discrimination. She holds an interdisciplinary MSc in Human Rights, with a research focus on feminist approaches to the sociology of Science & Technology. Prior to joining EDRi, Ella worked in digital business transformation.

Diego Naranjo

Head of Policy

Diego is a lawyer with a human rights background who joined EDRi in October 2014. He oversees the work of the EDRi policy team and coordinates the networks’ advocacy efforts. He follows the debate around encryption, the ePrivacy Regulation, privacy of communications (CSAM-related legslation) and workers’ surveillance. Between 2017-2018 he was a member of the expert group on digital rights put together by the Spanish Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital
Agenda. He co-founded the Andalusian human rights organisation Grupo 17 de Marzo and worked on migration law, labour law, and international criminal law before specialising on digital rights.

Jan Penfrat

Senior Policy Advisor

Jan is leading EDRi’s work on platform regulation, including the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, and covers policies related to disinformation and surveillance advertising. Before joining EDRi, Jan was a freelance technology reporter at the German IT magazine Golem.de where he covered internet regulation, IT security and open source software. He started his career as a policy consultant for the lobbying firm EUTOP and was a co-founder of the Privacy Training Center.

Guillermo Peris

Community Coordinator

Guillermo’s main goal is to facilitate the synergies among EDRi members and observers and making sure the different organisations that constitute EDRi work in the best possible conditions. He is also constantly looking for new organisations in order to recruit them to join the EDRi family. If you’d like to join us, he’s the one you should talk to. In his free time he loves drinking beer, reading whatever falls in his hands on science fiction or mythology and have heated conversations about politics.

Fenya Fischler

Membership and Community Officer

Fenya supports and coordinates EDRi members, builds capacity and knowledge-sharing programmes, contributes to events and builds connections with broader coalitions. She is a an experienced organiser and researcher who has worked within the fields of human rights, feminism, drug policy and migration for over a decade. Katarína Bartovičová

Fundraising Manager

Katarina is responsible for developing relationships and raising funds from foundations, individuals, companies and other sources. Before joining EDRi, she had over a decade of fundraising experience, primarily at Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe, Amnesty International in Slovakia, Post Bellum SK and at the Slovak Fundraising Centre, which she co-established and has been its Deputy Chair since 2009. She holds a Master degree in Film and Television Production & Management from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Andreea Belu

Campaigns and Communications Manager

Andreea’s life goal is to ensure EDRi’s work is chewable & digestible for the wide public. She is responsible for developing the network’s campaign infrastructure and often co-organises EDRi’s events. In the past, she was the Board Director of the Danish NGO Oi4P, interviewed for DataEthics.eu and worked in a PET Startup. She has a Master in Business and Philosophy from Copenhagen Business School. Gail Rego

Senior Communications and Media Manager

Gail is responsible for promoting the work of the EDRi network, improving the communication and brand of EDRi as well as developing stronger relationships with media and the press specifically. Previously, she worked as the Head of Communications at Missing Children Europe and Communications and Partnerships Manager at the European Venture Philanthropy Network. Gail is passionate about building bridges between the tech sector, digital rights spaces and social justice causes. She volunteers with People of Colour Brussels. Maria Belén Luna Sanz

Campaigns Officer

Belén is responsible for downloading the complexities around digital rights into accessible pieces of information. She contributes to the network’s campaign coalition - building and connects the larger public with EDRi’s mission. Prior to joining EDRi, she co-founded the Network of Feminist Professionals and developed the first policy for girls and digital technology in Bolivia. She holds a Master's Degree in Gender and Development from the Institute of Development Studies. Viktoria Tomova

Junior Communications Officer

Viktoria is responsible for EDRi's social media, website, newsletter, press and publications. Valentina Carrasco

Campaigns Intern

Valentina is EDRI's Campaigns intern. She supports the coordination and evaluation of the biometrics campaign as well as creating visuals for online and offline campaigning. She has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and one in Illustration and visual arts. She is a member of the intersectional and decolonial feminist collective Sororidad sin Fronteras and she is passionate about the interaction between arts, technology and social movements.
