    Here is a super simple example of how competition drives down price. Sienna, a Finnish company, packages 25 tests to a box. Abbott’s Binax has 2. This lowers cost. Also lowers waste/trash. And lowers distribution costs.

    If this article is right, the US Govt is about to pay over $7/test for a commodity product selling for $0.88/test at retail in Germany. Thrilled we are finally going Antigen, but the regulatory capture in our health system is ridiculous.

    Awesome news that we are finally listening to . I think it’s safe to say lives would been saved if this happened a year ago. Issue isn’t production. 67 vendors approved in Germany. It’s the FDA looking after only a few companies. Good news anyway.

    In order to better detect and control the Delta variant, I am taking steps to make testing more available, affordable, and convenient. I will use the Defense Production Act to increase production of rapid tests — including those you can use at home.

    Stenzel spent 5 years at Quidel Corporation, which is 1 of 2 vendors approved by the FDA. Once again, 67 vendors in Germany: This stuff is a commodity & should cost < $1. Yet, the FDA handing out free $$$ to select vendors. And sold out in many areas!

    Just one week after the FDA "rebuke," the UK "EXPANDED" the use of the same exact product from the same exact vendor. One of the signatories on the "warning letter" is Tim Stenzel, a director at the FDA. (cont)

    Here is a strange one that seems to highlight that something isn't quite right with the FDA approach to rapid antigen tests. We have 2 approved vendors. Germany 67. When Innova applied in US, FDA gave strong "Warning Letter" strikedown () from FDA. (cont)

    Testing. In the UK, anyone can get a pack of antigen tests for free, mailed to you next-day, here:

    W/ Covid likely "with us" forever, superiority of Rapid Antigen tests is critical to understand. Europe is way ahead of US (Germany: 67 approved vendors, US: 2). Price 15x higher here. But policy also important. Europe "recommends" antigen first. U.S. gov't still reluctant.

    Did you know: A test *not* performed has a sensitivity of 0% for symptomatic and asymptomatic ppl A test w a 48 hr delay has 0% during the days of waiting I talk a lot about sensitivity- but if we want to detect infectious people - frequency of testing is even more important.

    Choosing alternative new approach requires courage & intelligence. This first batch of DLs are likely biased towards smart founder/CEOs that intuitively understand why DL is better governance & have very high confidence in their business. Could have some positive selection bias.

    The fact that DLs have outperformed their peer IPOs destroys most of the arguments about why you need to knowingly “give away” your company’s equity to entice Wall Street. But I think there may be other factors (cont)…
