Disabled, poor, fat & older people, and poc will be the first to die. Again. “The crisis standards… will ultimately only afford some patients “comfort care”—keeping them pain-free, but potentially denying them a hospital room, bed, or even life-saving medical equipment.

The ramp’s form is reconstructed as a tactile, touch-based model that transmits a sense of the vibrations caused by ancient crowds. The picture gallery, whose paintings are known only through text description, is reconstructed in sign languages.

These elements vanished long ago, and none have any precisely known physical, visual or material quality. Thus, we also use contemporary ideas about impairment, access, and disability aesthetics to reconstruct them into a variety of physical forms as valid as any other.

The elements we reconstructed include an enormous 5th c. BCE ramp that once connected the Acropolis to the Agora below; a gallery of paintings in the Acropolis at the top of the ramp that offered respite from the climb; and a small stone seat, described by an ancient visitor

This installation presents an experiment in the historic reconstruction of the Acropolis in Athens. Our reconstructions recover ideas about bodies and impairment at one of the most canonical, influential, and notoriously inaccessible historic architectural sites.

An Archaeology of Disability (now installed in Venice) David Gissen, Jennifer Stager, Mantha Zarmakoupi The accessibility of historic architecture not only determines who can experience the past, but it also informs how we think about disabled people as part of history.

A man sits on one of three stone seats watching a film performed in International and American sign languages. Each seat is drilled with patterns of holes. A black model of a ramp that vibrates when touched stands behind the seats. Two photographs of the rock of the Acropolis and a small, rickety elevator to its top hang on one wall. A geological map of the Acropolis and the exhibition wall text hangs on the other wall.

I’m in the same boat and have two other immunocompromised ppl in my household! I can’t risk going to the theaters and I’m willing to pay the $30 fee if I have to for movies I wanna see. The announcement about Shang-Chi made me 😞. I thought D+ would get it at the same time.
