Meet Merrie Morris
Meredith “Merrie” Ringel Morris is the Director and Principal Scientist at the People + AI Research Team at Google Research, and an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. She was named an ACM Fellow for contributions to human-computer interaction, information retrieval, computer-supported cooperative work, and accessibility. A member of ACM SIGCHI's CHI Academy, Morris has received several awards from SIGCHI conferences. She has been recognized as one of Technology Review’s “35 under 35” for her work on collaborative web search.

HLF 2021, September 20 to 23 (online)
The 2021 Heidelberg Laureate Forum will introduce new components, including the laureate debate and speed-networking. The timely Hot Topic for this year is “Spread of Infectious Diseases.” As in past HLFs, many of the laureate lectures will be delivered by ACM A.M. Turing Award and ACM Prize recipients, such as Vint Cerf and Daphne Koller. Workshops will include a pitch session to science news and magazine editors, and panel discussions will cover "The Scientific Vocation Revisited" and other topics.

Meet Jennifer Chayes
Jennifer Chayes is a Professor and Associate Provost of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society and Dean of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley. She spent more than 20 years at Microsoft as a Technical Fellow and as Managing Director of labs at Microsoft Research. The labs she founded have roughly three times the percentage of women compared to corporate labs, and a high percentage of people of color and members of the LGBTQ community. Chayes received the 2020 ACM Distinguished Service Award for her leadership, mentorship and dedication to diversity.

Differential Privacy: The Pursuit of Protections by Default
As privacy violations have become rampant and calls for better measures to protect sensitive, personally identifiable information have primarily resulted in bureaucratic policies satisfying almost no one, differential privacy is emerging as a potential solution. In “Differential Privacy: The Pursuit of Protections by Default,” a Case Study in ACM Queue, Google’s Damien Desfontaines and Miguel Guevara reflect with Jim Waldo and Terry Coatta on the engineering challenges that lie ahead for differential privacy, as well as what remains to be done to achieve their ultimate goal of providing privacy protection by default.

ACM Updates Code of Ethics
ACM recently updated its Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The revised Code of Ethics addresses the significant advances in computing technology since the 1992 version, as well as the growing pervasiveness of computing in all aspects of society. To promote the Code throughout the computing community, ACM created a booklet, which includes the Code, case studies that illustrate how the Code can be applied to situations that arise in everyday practice and suggestions on how the Code can be used in educational settings and in companies and organizations.
