Managing the default branch name for your repositories

You can set the default branch name new repositories that you create on GitHub.

About the default branch name

When you create a new repository on GitHub, the repository contains one branch, which is the default branch. You can change the name that GitHub uses for the default branch in new repositories you create. For more information about the default branch, see "About branches."

You can set the name of the default branch for new repositories. For more information, see "Managing the default branch for your repositories," "Managing the default branch name for repositories in your organization," and "Enforcing repository management policies in your enterprise account."

Setting the default branch name

  1. Klicke in der oberen rechten Ecke einer beliebigen Seite auf Dein Profilfoto und klicke dann auf Settings (Einstellungen). Symbol „Settings" (Einstellungen) auf der Benutzerleiste
  2. Klicke in der linken Seitenleiste auf Repositories (Repositorys). Registerkarte „Repositories“ (Repositorys)
  3. Under "Repository default branch", click Change default branch name now. Override button
  4. Type the default name that you would like to use for new branches. Text box for entering default name
  5. Klicke auf Update (Aktualisieren). Update button
