I've been doing a bit more WordPress than usual, lately. Mostly this has been as part of my role as Release Coordinator for WordPress version 5.6 - an historic release in which all the release squad identify as women. It's a great honour to be a part of that cohort, and of a community that is taking steps to continue to try and level the playing field for all to participate equally. That experience has made me newly reinvigorated to be playing about with WordPress, discussing it, and life … [Read more...]
Asking a Better Question
In my time as a developer and trainer for hire I have been asked by clients or trainees to make changes to their websites. More recently I've been working as a team lead/project manager and I'm finding that even though the context is different I'm often asked by clients to make changes to content, or code, or to processes. A lot of times this is no big deal; there have been cases where I've been gung ho! and dived straight in to make the changes the client asks for, after all, I have wanted … [Read more...]
Growing & Developing your WordPress Meetup
Below is a transcript of my talk from WordCamp Europe 2016 in which I talked about growing & developing your WordPress meetup. If you were there and just wanted the download of templates... the zip file is here. There are two universal (and often unconscious) questions people ask themselves when deciding whether to join a community. The first is ‘ARE they Like me?’ When someone is looking at a meetup page, or a website about a meetup group, the choice to attend an event will be … [Read more...]
Making an Escape
There's nothing like spending your work life on a project that features some completely delicious images of faraway places to stir up excitement about chucking the laptop in my bag and taking off for more adventures. It's been 18 months or more since the US experience, time to turn my attention back to Europe, where I haven't set foot for 25 years or more. The aforementioned project is one I'm rather proud of, and one that I had the thrill of changing roles to achieve. I moved from hands on … [Read more...]
Changing Tack : Adjusting your Sails for the Winds of Change
I’m going to come right out and say it here, I’m not a sailor… but there were too many really good metaphors that are going to help support this talk (and too many gorgeous pictures) to boot… So, my apologies to all those of you who sail for any errors in my terminology! That said, here’s one thing I do know. When you are heading into the wind, tacking is the manoeuvre you undertake to make your way in that direction and grab the wind you need to get where you want to go. The interesting … [Read more...]
Beating Imposter Syndrome
In one of our recent WordPress Melbourne meetups the theme for the evening was Imposter Syndrome. You know what I mean by that, right? That nagging feeling that you're just not quite up to scratch. It's the feeling that holds you back from putting yourself out there for bigger, better challenges. It will cripple you as you compare yourself to others. I was one the lineup to speak that night, and in between two of the legends of WordPress in Australia, Peter Wilson and Gary Pendergast. I … [Read more...]

It was a great experience sharing my journey, and an equally great one hearing from everyone else about theirs. Here are the slides of significance from the talk (ALL the slides are available on the link at the … [Read more...]
Credible Web Professionals and WordPress as a Credible CMS
One of the things that happened last year was that I had a number of interesting conversations with a client seeking a quote who had been navigating the process of choosing a developer for their simple business website. I was one of three people up for the job. The client had come to me asking for a WordPress site as they'd used WP before and were a little familiar with how it works. But they were uncertain because the competitors touting for this work had rubbished WordPress as a viable … [Read more...]

The WordPress Project: It’s all about YOU!
Hey team!! Hope you're having a fabulous day... I'm sitting here in my office, the sky outside is grey (I live in Melbourne, let's not pretend that's unusual) but I'm so excited that there have been glimpses of Spring... there are freesias in the garden and soon there'll be daffodils along the paths I walk in the morning. Oh, and hopefully today my new laptop arrives. What's not to be happy about!!! This is a bit of an unusual post, it isn't a tutorial, it's a 'request for comment' well, a … [Read more...]
