A big thanks to everyone coordinating and editing drafts from past meeting notes which will be up shortly in the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/.. As a few people are on personal holidays and others are unwell due to Covid, we are a little behind on Notes and will post updates in the coming weeks.

A reminder to check the draft notes is circulated at the meeting every week. Please review and check your WordPress.org ID is listed on collaborations that you have actively contributed too. We rely on this to update the final notes and to put into our charts to show where we need extra contributors, and how we are having an input and impact onto the work assigned/requested from other teams.

Most typically done when changing hosting companies., and especially to @vimes1984 and @meher who are leading this tool setup and usage with @webcommsat.  
  • There was another working session on GitHub on Wednesday 4 August.  
  • The sessions on how to use GitHub will be scheduled for after the holidays as we have a lot of people away at the moment.

WordPress 5.8 was released yesterday. Well done to everyone who was involved in this release and during the last three months. As marketers and communicators, our work continues.

In today’s global Marketing meeting at 14:00 UTC today (Wednesday 21 July 2021) and the rest of the week, we will have lots of items to research and pull together. Our first priority is to finalize the initial social media posts draft on the WP 5.8 release, which were made available for fact-checking in the Marketing Slack and Release Leads, so thank you to those who have already added answers or further comments.

What broad areas will we be covering?

We are continuing collaborations on a pack and supporting resources following on from our pilot and Josepha’s requests.

We will divide the work into two groups – one for developers and the other for non-developers, so everyone has some to work on and is welcome to join our meeting.

  • finalizing / dealing with remaining questions in the initial social media drafts and adding any new based on the last week’s information (please mark up any new items so we can different it from what may have already been checked by the squad leads)
  • categorizing the posts for an amplification pack and draft schedule, especially keeping in mind what Meetups may find particularly useful
  • collating useful links / topic areas on the release which are being shared in social media which may be an additional area for posts or be useful for awareness of the squad
  • adding to the document on favorite release feature

Tools you will need to take part

The collaboration will be progressed in the Marketing Team slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel and use Google documents / sheets which will be shared on Slack. We know a few of our collaborators are finding commenting and viewing Google Sheets difficult, so we will have an alternative format available where they can add their work.

We will also continue to make use of GitHub, as in recent pilots.

Who can help?

Everyone! We have broken down the tasks to enable as many people from different backgrounds to be able to collaborate, building on what has worked in other collaborations and feedback.

We especially could do with some more developers input from those who have tested or used 5.8.

We post collaborations before the meeting to help with accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) and to help enable collaboration from different timezones. So let us know if you are planning to collaborate asynchronously before or after the meeting too. Everyone is welcome to be involved directly or shadow. We also have a number of new joiners who are shadowing at the moment too.

With @nalininonstopnewsuk, @meher, @marybaum, @OGlekler, @yvettesonneveld, @vimes1984, @maedahbatool and others, there will be support during different timezones during the collaborations. If you would like to help support other collaborators, especially those new to the team, let us know.

Do I have to live in a particular place or have a specific background to take part?

There are no restrictions. We have people involved from across timezones and countries, from a variety of skillsets and WordPress experiences. We have had contributors from the team who have gone on to discover a joy for testing, translation or writing documentation, and people who come and help for specific areas from other teams too.

We are keen to promote the many ways people can support the growth and development of WordPress and its community.

There are specific parts of our work which benefit from a background as a writer, editor, marketer and PR, in search or research, developer, or task collator. But there are lots of opportunities for those new to marketing and communications too and we have onboarding support and training available too.

When you can help?

Global marketing meeting Wednesdays 30 June and 7 July 2021, at 14:00 UTC, drop-in sessions (more details at 30 June meeting), and asynchronously during this period.

What will we be collaborating on for the next two weeks?

We will be researching and writing social media draft copy for the WordPress 5.8 release. As in previous releases recently and promotions, we will draft posts which will be edited into a social media amplification pack, covering in the main Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn channels. This will be able to be used and adapted by others in their own networks, by meetups and users wanting to share the benefits, latest features and showcase the community of contributors.

The information source will be the final version of the About Page text, which should be committed later today for Release CandidateRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. 1.

Can you give a few hours to help in the live collaborations or asynchronously?

  • @chanthaboune consolidated all of the feedback from our group About Page collaboration, it should be in CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. by next Tuesday, 29 June 2021. 
  • There is a new marketing lead for wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ (more details here) who will be attending Marketing meetings after the WP5.8 release.

5a) Learn Audit Tool Discussion

  • We are continuing to discuss the Learn WordPress proposal for an audit tool and how it could be potentially used as a marketing team audit tool as well.
  • @courane01 can help answer any terminology questions and has met with #docs about the audit tool idea. HelpHub, DevHub, Docs and Learn all have significant content needs with WP release updates.
  • The audit tool specifically digs in to where we have content in particular – screenshots, videos, articles etc to modify with updates.

  • To get more context around the use cases for the audit tool, please read the entire discussion in Slack. 
  • Please participate in the shared document where we can add how we think an audit tool like this could be of benefit to our work in marketing and how we would work together with Learn WordPress, Training, Docs, etc. Link in Slack.

  • The brand guidelines have been highlighted as a top priority item for Learn WordPress.
  • There are several instructional designers coming aboard as sponsored contributors to Learn from Automattic. Hugh will be coordinating with them, Marketing/Training, and Community/Foundation folks to get this idea through.
  • Any content on Learn that mentions a pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party/theme/etc. by name is at the moment, on hold.
