3 pros!
Selecting the right masonry contractor should involve multiple bids and references from the contractors you interview. One provider shares five helpful steps.
One day while working in your yard, you look up at your chimney and notice that something isn’t right. Maybe a couple of bricks have fallen down or the mortar between the joints has separated. It’s clear there’s a problem and it’s time to make repairs.
Since most of us don’t have time to begin an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, we often need to hire a masonry professional to help us get the job done right. Below are five steps for hiring a masonry contractor that will assist you in getting the best person for the job.
Step 1. Get multiple bids.
Call at least three contractors to come bid your work, as this will give you price options as well as allow you meet with each contractor. If you just don't feel right about a contractor, don't use them.
If they contradict themselves or don't explain exactly what there going to do, it’s best to look elsewhere. A professional brick contractor should be able to offer you multiple bids and give options on materials and install costs. Finally, if they can’t show courtesy or respect, they won't show your home respect either.

Step 2. Ask questions.
Always ask the brick contractor to explain in simple terms what the job entails, especially if you do not understand their terminology. A skilled and professional masonry contractor should always be able to communicate in a clear, concise way.
3. Get a timeline.
Get a timeline from the contractor as to how long the job will take, as this will eliminate confusion about what is a reasonable request. Hold them accountable while adjusting your own expectations for changes to the job that may affect the timeline.
4. Ask for references.
If a contractor can’t give you three references you can actually call, then they are not confident that every job they do is reference worthy. Contact each reference about the contractor and make sure not to rush this step, as it could save you money.
5. Trust your instincts.
Remember to trust your gut instinct, even if you only find one contractor willing to give you a bid. If it doesn’t feel right, keep looking until you find the right person for the mason job.
As a brick contractor, I follow these rules and I expect my clients to do the same. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but know this: contractors know and understand how important your home is to you, because most of them are homeowners as well.
