John Nugent & Sons Inc
5.0
Nugent & Sons was the only company (I received estimates from 3 companies) that was able to install a hard to find HVAC unit for my condo. My condo is quite small and an older unit. This made it hard to find an HVAC unit that meets modern efficiency standards but is still able to fit into the small space of the older HVAC unit. Their estimate was also one of the lowest. All their employees were extremely cordial, considerate, and professional. Installation was on schedule. Very highly recommended.

Air Quality Heating & Air Conditioning

Beware and weigh your options before hiring this team. Matt and his team did successfully replace my HVAC system, was reasonable and transparent about price, but have significant gaps that prevent a 5-star review. I’ll update the review based on inspection results. 1. Communication issues: I spent a month of calling/texting/emailing to get in touch with Matt to start the project after initial inspection. Then when the project did not pass first inspection, one of Matt’s technicians came to check. I found the guy very defensive and he left without acknowledging my concerns. Then Matt called and yelled at me, accusing me being difficult, wouldn’t allow any time for me to speak up. I felt belittled as a customer, especially because of the next incident. 2. Cleanliness issues: Matt’s team spilled purple chemical to my light-colored carpet. They also did not cover the floor fully so there was yellowish stain. The lead technician didn’t want to address the issue. When he finally agreed he couldn’t remove it. Matt came back twice to remove the purple stain with some unknown solvent with strong odor, but insisted the yellowish was my cat’s pee. It was not. The team walked inside and out of my house with booties halfway off which defeated the purpose. I found myself very uncomfortable with the way they worked, but still agreeably paid the full amount as they completed the task and it’s difficult for everyone during COVID. 3. Respectfulness and Integrity: The lead technician lied to Matt about inspecting our attic. He did not enter the attic. I was working by the entrance the entire time. When I gave feedback to Matt, out of best intentions, he let me know he trusted his guys and did not send anyone to check the ducts in attic. He also petted my dog without asking. Which was a no-no during COVID.

This appointment went so much better than I ever expected. The problem was much simpler than I had been lead to believe and given an expensive quote from another company - HUGE $$$$$ difference. Matt's Godly mannerism and spirit preceded him, just from the phone message he left me. His skills and professionalism and honesty serviced the needed repair, making this customer a blessed one; in such a needed time. Thank you Matt and Company, may God continue to be a blessing to you and your business!!!!

Atlas Trillo Has provided excellent customer from start to finish. Sales Rep Timmy Ton was awesome, he listened to our needs and provided an honest quote and personable. Our install team was top notch Jesus and Vu came in and removed the old HVAC unit and installed the new equipment. They where very nice and knowledgeable, the install took two days and at the end of the work day they cleaned up after themselves and left my home super clean. Jesus and Vu are an awesome team and I was lucky to have them do my install. They also made sure that I understood how to use my new Nest Pro thermostat and how to use all the special energy saving modes. I will definitely recommend Atlas Trillo to my family and firiends and they provide professional and also personable service. Thank you again, Walter -T

Richard's Heating & Air Repair
5.0
We have chosen Richards heating and AC to replace and move our furnace to the attic. We have done extensive research and received a few quotes, but at the end, what made us make up our minds and choose Richards - is the way we were not pressured into agreement, but rather given time to make our own choice and were given quite honest feedback and explanations for how to choose best furnace/ AC combo to meet our needs. It's rare when a company takes time to thoroughly explain the pros and cons of different models so we could understand our options. We did have one minor incident where they replaced the ducting and wanted to give us a surprise charge or $3500 after. We said we never asked for the ducts to be replaced and this additional charge was removed so all was good. We were scheduled for work pretty fast and are very happy with the way the crew did their work. Jose, Cole, and Olim were very professional and accommodative.. Arrived on time and always cleaned everything up at the end of the day. They also included us on some decisions vs just choosing it for us – like the intake placement and ac placement. We are very pleased with the results: much quieter furnace and perfect flow from air registers.

Sandium
5.0
The Sandium team were very professional and helpful. We wanted to have our HVAC ductwork cleaned and requested a quote. Tyler performed an inspection of the system and informed us the existing ducts had asbestos and could not be cleaned without the chance of asbestos being released. During the inspection, he noticed the return air paths into the furnace were not effective and recommended installing a new filter box. This entailed raising the furnace/AC system by a couple of feet to make room for it. After the new ducts were installed and the filter box installed, his team installed attic eave vents and blown in insulation to bring the R factor to R 50. He also helped us submit paperwork to the BayREN upgrade incentive program so that we received a rebate for a percentage of the project. The Sandium crew of Jesus "Chava" Lomeli & Jamie Rocha were outstanding during the project, I would definitely recommend this company for work and have done so.

Recent Review: Fabulous! The company was professional and efficient in every day from the in-house consultation through the finished installation. I obtained four proposals and Nugent won out in every way. They provided the Carrier Performace A/C unit and furnace. I had chosen additional components: humidifier and a media filter. Additionally, they installed the WiFi thermostat I had purchased. I am delighted with the equipment and the service provided by Nugent and Sons. I had decided to replace my old system before the winter and am so glad I had the luxury of taking the time to research HVAC systems and go through a bidding process. I recommend this company without any reservations.

Recent Review: I left a message on their website, and next day I got a phone call to follow-up. The experience is very decent at first. They told me that they are very busy, and therefore the earliest day to estimate would be three weeks later. (Note, estimate, not the start date). Since I am going to renovating a old house which require lots of work and would cost me 150 to 200 thousands, I asked whether it's possible to send someone to "help" me or "guide me", or at least to take a look of my property so that we can sort of knowing the budget. I was told that there will be a follow-up call next day. It never happens. Follow-up phone call never arrived. Even worse, I then tried several time to reach them, via email, via phone number they left on my voice mail, and their website. NO one works. I can't believe that their phone number is "unreachable". You can't leave a message, and it's just beep beep beep when you try to call them. Basically, they just cut off all the communication channel. I'm really wondering why they still receive such an appraisement. Honestly, I am giving up on them. I can't imagine that I hire a GC but I cannot reach him at all. Yes, they probably do a good job, but they are way too busy. I would be panic to work with them given things. Good luck if you want to give a try. Just add a follow-up: They call me on Tuesday after seeing this review. I'll update the review after the job is done as a whole.

Recent Review: We decided to take on a 500+ sq foot addition and full remodel of our downstairs. With design and permit in hand, we began contacting contractors. What a headache! But once I got together with Mark C. from ADH, things ran unbelievably smoothly. Seriously, we just kept waiting for the ball to drop and it never did. In short, we did a full kitchen remodel, converted a laundry room to pantry, converted a bath to a laundry, renovated three other downstairs rooms, and the addition (living room, powder room, entry, and closet). We also redid the entire siding and updated all the windows. Mark thought there was a chance that we'd be done before Thanksgiving (I set my self up to be ecstatic if we were done by Christmas). The crew left us with our new full house for visitors at Thanksgiving sans interior trim work and a few other little touch ups. They came back over the holiday and knocked out the rest in a couple of days. I couldn't be more happy! Mark, the company owner, was our project manager and Mike G was his right hand man. They were great to work with. Very helpful, very concerned that things went well for us, and that we knew what was happening at all times. The real heroes were the team on the ground. Vlad and Peter were with us from the first day of the project to the last. They were the interior guys and really among the best people that I've ever worked with on any sort of project. Their attention to detail was amazing. This was a huge job and they rolled right on through it like the true professionals that they are. Vlad was great about communicating to me about their workflow and what I should expect to see coming next. Peter was painstakingly detailed about his trimwork and painting (he set a standard for masking our front door prior to painting that I'll certainly never live up to). They've been gone now for a few days and I'll admit I already miss my morning check-ins with them. Vlad and Peter weren't the only guys I want to thank. They had a few other guys that came in with them from time to time to help out on various parts of the interior work. The framing crew was amazing, they framed the addition in just a couple of days and took our paper plans and turned them into something really beautiful. The concrete team knocked out the foundation in just a couple of days (from excavation to pour) and then came back to add a very nice little porch toward the end. The drywall, texture, and HVAC teams were also spot on. What's amazing was how coordinated everything was. For this, I thank Mark and Mike. Admittedly, Mark did say that the timing of things was particularly good, but come on... 12 weeks from first demo to sign off? That's a QUALITY team... I recommend HIGHLY!

Recent Review: Got the Angie's list deal fo the an AC tune-up. We had been in our house for a year and had not had trouble with the AC the year before, but was just covering our bases. At that point in the Spring, the AC had only been on once and seemed to work fine. They came out and really spent a long time doing the tune-up. However, we discovered that our system was actually pretty old, and the repair guy said that he thought one of the parts was on its last leg, even though it was currently working. He recommended that we may want to repair that part, and that the full cost for just that part would be about $400 but he did recommend about $1000 worth of work to fully tune things up. He also said they would send out a guy to discuss how much it would cost to replace the system (I suspect that is just part of their routine protocol when they spot an older system). Knowing that the system was pretty old already, we decided to compare the cost of a new system vs. doing the remaining work to fully tune things up. We scheduled a time for the sales guy to come out about 3 weeks later. Unfortunately, not long before the sales guy was supposed to come, it got hot outside and the AC tried to turn on and no cold air was coming out of the system. We called them back, but since the sales guy was about to come anyway, we just waited to see what the cost of a new system would be. The sales guy was extremely nice and very helpful. Now, he is a sales man so you always have to take everything they say with a grain of salt, but I really do think he was very helpful. There were some very mild pressure sales tactics (e.g. they say you get a discount for making a deal that day rather than having them come back out after you've gotten others to give you other quotes). But really he did not push that hard, and honestly, I would have expected him to do so, especially in light of the fact that our AC had just fully gone out. Ultimately, I told him what I was willing to pay for the system he offered (which was quite a bit lower than he quoted), and he called his boss, and they accepted. The team came out two days later and were very professional while installing the sytem, and very helpful in making sure everything was working well and that we understood how to use the system. Since then, 6 months later, we ended up with an error alert and called them. They sent someone out the next day and found a faulty part. They fixed it within 1 day. In fact, the repairman told my wife that it would normally have taken a few days for the part to come and they had to really scramble to figure out a clever way to get the part, otherwise their policy was that they would have to pay us $500 if it had not been fixed within 24 hours (which I'm sure I was told at one point but had forgotten and would never have held them to it). So overall, we have been very satisfied with their professionalism and service. We also had neighbors tell us they used the same company in the past and thought they were great. I told my sister about them, and she got the same tune-up deal. Interestingly, her AC went out not long after she had the tune-up as well. (Obviously, I began to think this was some sort of scam). But she had signed up for one of their service contracts, and they sent a guy out right away and fixed the problem at a nominal cost. So overall, they seem to be very reputable and do a great job.

Recent Review: Excellent experience with A-1. They made the process stress free and had us cool in no time. Brad came out to give us an estimate the same day we called about our A/C issues. He was able to provide me an estimate with multiple options catered to our budget and needs. The crew was on time and pleasure to work with. I will definitely use them again in the future and recommend them to anyone in need of HVAC services.

What are common HVAC repair issues?

Most HVAC technicians will tell you the leading cause of HVAC repair problems is owner neglect. If you fail to have annual service visits, fail to replace disposable air filters, or fail to pay attention to the small trouble signs, you could be looking at hefty repair costs.

These are typical repair problems we see in Angie's List reviews:

  • Clogged air filters — Homeowners can replace their own disposable filters monthly; enlist professional help for deep media or permanent filters.
  • Improperly balanced systems — Supply and return airflow must be balanced.
  • Leaking or low refrigerant — Central air conditioners require modern, environmentally friendly refrigerant to efficiently cool interior spaces.
  • Thermostats — Malfunctioning or wrongly set thermostats waste energy.

How much do HVAC repair services near me cost?

The typical HVAC service call costs between $39 to $260, which is a very wide range influenced by many factors:

  • Call charge — A flat rate intended to help recoup travel and time costs.
  • Expertise — Better talent costs more - a more experienced, highly trained technician is usually worth the extra rate.
  • Timing of your service call — Expect to pay more for midnight furnace repair and July 4th A/C repair.

Expect to pay additional charges for parts that must be replaced. Most modern HVAC service fleets have well-stocked trucks, and many A/C systems use industry-standard, interchangeable parts. This saves time, travel and money with “back to the shop” round trips.

How much does a thermostat cost?

Parts alone can run into hundred of dollars, though a good replacement thermostat, for example, may only cost $80 or so.

How do I make sure I'm getting a good deal near me for my money?

Before engaging any HVAC contractor, check the company out on online forums such as here to make sure you will get what you pay for. Be sure your contractor has proper licensing and insurance. The List of HVAC repair services on this page should help you find a local, reliable HVAC technician.

What other things should I consider before, during and after hiring an HVAC repair service near me?

  • Ask for references and customer testimonials if the repair is not urgent.
  • If you think the repair will be extensive or minor, get three estimates.
  • Be sure to ask if the technician has experience working on your brand of HVAC unit.
  • Once you hire a contractor, ask to see the old parts being replaced.

How often should I get my HVAC's ducts cleaned?

Every three to five years homeowners should have their air ducts cleaned by a pro.

How long should a HVAC system last?

Most quality HVAC systems should last more than 15 years - many warranties will cover them for 20 years. Be sure to have it maintained regularly to reach these numbers, and beyond.

Much of our indoor work and play would be unbearable without heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to treat, clean and warm or cool the air. When your HVAC system goes awry, how can you be sure you are getting quality, affordable HVAC repair?
