New IRC Server for support

Hi folks, you may have heard the news about freenode, and if not, a quick search should solve that.

Because of that, we’ve decided to move the WordPress support-, and social chat to a new network. Discussions about the development of the WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. software it self will of course still remain on Slack.

If you’d like to continue being one of our awesome IRC support volunteers, please join us over on the new Libera network, you can do so by connecting to irc.libera.chat and joining #WordPress, or through their webchat service.

If you previously held a registered nickname on the freenode network, and would like to do the same at Libera, please read their guide on registering names.

WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe is offering up a workshop slot for the support team, as opposed to the normal contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. The deadline for this is quite close, at June 15th, so there’s no time to lose.

Due to the short time here, if anyone feels strongly about helping make this happen, please feel free to start discussing and organizing in the team channel on Slack at your convenience, and don’t feel obligated ot wait for the team meeting to get things rolling.

Support Team Deputies

The support team is looking for one or two contributors who would like to be more involved as team deputies.

With the increase in areas that support can tie into, and may benefit from collaborating with, the need for some extra hands to hold the ropes will help the current support team lead.

To set expectations, this is not a position that comes with any special access, but is an amazing way to get more involved with the support team in particular, and helping build better interactions between the other teams.

Tasks that may be involved are:

  • Helping to facilitate the teams weekly meetings, with the associated agenda and (if applicable) summary posts
  • Helping build stronger ties with the various international forums
  • Helping facilitate upcoming WordPress releases with the Release Support Lead (if the release has one)
  • Checking in with other teams if there are cross-team collaborative efforts going on

Being a forum moderator or similar is not a requirement, but some previous involvement should be considered a minimum, just so that the applicant has an understanding of how the team functions.

With the possibility of WordPress 5.8 including Full Site Editing (FSE), and if it doesn’t then 5.9 should, we as a team should start looking at how to prepare for this.

It’s not unlikely to expect that questions will be heavily skewed towards FSE in the coming releases, how would the team like to prepare for this, what resources are needed, and how can this be facilitated.

WordPress 5.8 preparations

With Full Site Editing making it’s initial appearance in WordPress 5.8, the support team have started to prepare actionable items to get ready for it’s arrival.

Under are some thoughts and concerns that came up in that discussion, and which we’ll try to address moving forward up to the release date.

If there are other concerns or talking points, please feel free to provide them in a comment here, or raise them in an upcoming support meeting!

  • Coordinate with docs to make sure relevant documentation is ready before release so that support can familiarize them selves with it.
  • Coordinate with the GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ team, how do they want to get feedback, and issues, reported in a sensible way. Support shouldn’t have to create tickets, but pushing users away and telling them to go to GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ is also a terrible experience.
  • Make sure Gutenberg team has people on hand and we know who is available to help on complex issues the team may not know the answers to.
  • This may be another scenario like the blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. editor release where we see The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. How do we support those who land in the thick of it with negatively inclined users. All while also trying to show understanding and compassion where it should be, not everyone is inherently bad, and may be concerned or scared users as well.
  • Likely a focus on existing users and how this affects them, more so than new users without existing themes and content.
