Just read this excellent BBC profile of , who talks openly and frankly about having Tourette's syndrome. I've had Tourette's since I was a kid, but even today it's still a widely misunderstood condition.

Scoop: Google has banned a location data gathering firm that was funded by the former head of Saudi Arabia's intelligence agency. The company SafeGraph had a contract with the U.S. CDC to provide data, is also funded by Peter Thiel. A big move from Google.

Take ClearVPN. One way that companies claim they're not collecting personal information is by shifting the very definition of what is personal information. Sure, a device ID on its own might not tell you much but if deanonymized, it can tell you *a lot*.

There is no reason for an app that's designed to protect your privacy to collect your device ID, since these can be used to identify you. App data is already being weaponized. Just recently a Catholic priest was outed as a Grindr user with this data.

Going to drop this right here for good measure. "Apple dropped plans to let iPhone users fully encrypt backups of their devices in the company's iCloud service after the FBI complained that the move would harm investigations," six sources told Reuters.

Yesterday, Apple said on of its many recent "background" calls with reporters that it has the "same commitment we've ever had" to end-to-end encryption. And yet, iCloud Backups remain conspicuously unencrypted. It makes you wonder why.

In other words, Apple says it believes the U.S. (where CSAM detection launches) cannot legally compel Apple to compromise the hashes to look for other objectionable content. Either Apple is really sure of its legal position, or vastly underappreciated it.

I read this as referring to the Apple-FBI backdoor effort a few years back, but it's certainly open to interpretation. It's also not unexpected; foreign governments can demand backdoors etc. as much as they want, but Apple can choose to comply if it makes business sense to do so.

I'll add that to date What3Words has been unable to point me to single case where a judicial court has asserted that WhatFreeWords violated its copyright. It's telling that What3Words prioritizes sending legal threats to good-faith researchers than fixing the problems they found.
