    Speaking as someone who has litigated and lost on this exact issue in three countries (UK, Germany, France), I feel confident in saying the firm refusal to filter for new things beyond CSAM doesn’t mean much in the face of state power.

    So basically: all that stands between users and governments demanding adding of non-CSAM images to the hash list is Apple's firm refusal?

    I read this as referring to the Apple-FBI backdoor effort a few years back, but it's certainly open to interpretation. It's also not unexpected; foreign governments can demand backdoors etc. as much as they want, but Apple can choose to comply if it makes business sense to do so.

    Uhm. Apple's "We have faced demands to build and deploy government-mandated changes that degrade the privacy of users before, and have steadfastly refused those demands." Is that extremely carefully formulated? Not true that Apple servers in China have less encryption?

    I'll add that to date What3Words has been unable to point me to single case where a judicial court has asserted that WhatFreeWords violated its copyright. It's telling that What3Words prioritizes sending legal threats to good-faith researchers than fixing the problems they found.

    One of those researchers is , who a few months ago got a legal threat from What3Words claiming copyright infringement for sharing a copy of an open-source alternative, WhatFreeWords, despite it being easily searchable on the web. 🤦

    Researchers have long said flaws in What3Words could lead to problems like this. "Chris Higgins, leader of the team, praised w3w generally as being incredibly helpful to rescuers, but with the caveat that there are instances of it proving it wildly inaccurate."
