"This is a "better late than never" review. We first used Bay Metro Corporation to remodel our upstairs guest bathroom, which Bay Metro totally gutted and replaced with a Victorian clawfoot tub, toilet, two sink vanity, wainscotting on the walls, and tile on the floor. We had a great working relationship with Manny Gonzalez, Bay Metro's main contact. Manny was very courteous and would give us lower cost options / alternatives to keep the total project costs down. Communication was great, contract was very clear, and we were extremely pleased with end result. We ended up using Manny again on another bathroom redo and kitchen remodel. "

"Everlast construction is a great company. I have worked with them several times in many projects. They did not fail to impress me! They di fantastic job on our bathroom remodel. We got bids from several construction companies and Everlast Construction quote was competitively priced. Not only did we choose them for their rate but also for the fantastic customer service and professionalism we received during our initial consultation. When youâ re remodelling your master bath, timeliness is of importance and Everlast exactly what you are looking for. They were very thorough on the project and kept me up to date on every step. There were no hiccups on my project and it was very detailed. They completed the remodel in time! I highly recommend Everlasting Construction for your next home improvement project."

"Tom and his crew are - in one word - fantastic! We received five bids for a small bathroom remodel. We ended up going with Tom and Bay Home Remodeling due to his competitive price (not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either), but even more so - just the really nice, easy-going, and trustworthy vibe that we got from Tom. Working with him proved to be exactly the great experience that we thought it would be. Tom was extremely helpful in assisting us in getting all the materials that we needed for the remodel and making some really great suggestions along the way. While on the job, he and his crew took very safe measures in working during the Covid-19 pandemic - always with masks and in keeping good physical distance. Tom was in contact daily to assure that everything was being done according to our satisfaction. Also, a special shout-out to Elias who did an amazing job and is just such a nice person. Interesting that our dog, who barks at just about everyone who comes in our house, did not bark at all at Tom or his crew... They finished the job exactly on time and with no additional hidden costs or 'change orders'. It's been so challenging going through this process of trying to find a good and trustworthy contractor. While it took some time, I'm happy to say that we finally did so. We're doing several other remodel projects and are definitely excited to be using Tom and Bay Home Remodeling. I highly recommend them! "

"The entire bathroom was remodeled, including installation of new tub, shower, vanity, counter top, tiles, lighting fixtures and plumbing. Bob and Henrique were great to work with and Sterling was very conscientious. Dave was very nice but did encounter some problems with the plumbing, but these were worked out. Very professional and thorough and would definitely recommend them!"

"My hat's off to Green Bay Remodeling for successfully completing, in a reasonable amount of time, this challenging Scandinavian-style bathroom remodel four flights up from the street. The challenge began years ago when the bathroom flooded causing dry rot and a mold infestation in the floor and the ceiling below. The mold remediation company had to completely gut the bathroom from several feet above the floor. When done, they recommended Green Bay as a company who could get on the job promptly, which they did. The remodel design was a collaborative effort, involving me (an architecture buff), my daughter (a landscape architect), and Green Bay's energetic Project Manager, Zack Ilinetsky. We agreed on a walk-in shower with no shower pan and a white tile surround. Zack suggested three wall boxes in the shower to break up the plain white, and, when I decided to avoid a bulky sink vanity, an elegant pedestal sink. He also suggested tiling the entire bathroom up to the window level, not just the shower. Zack, being knowledgeable about locally affordable bathroom fixtures, helped me keep the cost down why I indulged in ordering the finish materials online, thanks to Green Bay's policy of encouraging to choose them. I was impressed with the hard-working and technically skilled crew as they carried cement board and over a ton of tile up the four winding flights, creating a waterproof floor for the shower. Then a crisis occurred: the local planning department, which was in the midst of a reorganization, sent a plumbing inspector unfamiliar with the local code, who threatened us with having to tear up the beautiful water-tested floor! Zack really showed his energy and determination, going to the planning department and explaining the technical details. They understood and sent us another inspector who green-lighted completion of this ambitious remodel. Another unexpected treat Zack provided was the advanced ceiling fan with Bluetooth stereo speakers and a blue night-light. I can play music from my smartphone while enjoying my shower.  An automatic on-off switch for the new recessed LED ceiling lights was also installed. Having taken a luxurious shower in my new high-style bathroom (that's a pre-existing sauna behind the wooden door, by the way), I am now ready to show off my gorgeous new bathroom to the world. "I want to state that this was the first home remodel project that we've had done to the home. I waited to do this review to see if any issues popped up and I'm happy to say that nothing has. Owner did the estimate and assured us that the job would be perfect. He was absolutely correct. They did a walk-in shower conversion and it's stunning. There were some logistical issues that were dealt with fairly quickly. While this did add to the estimated time to completion that wasn't a big deal to us and I as the end result is what matters most. We highly recommend them to do any remodeling job that you require. It will be a top notch job with them making sure that you are completely satisfied with the end product."

"I hired Joe to do a tile job in my bathroom. I had a half tile shower with a seat in it, also tile around my bathtub and floor with a drain installed on the floor. The tile came out just beautiful. Also, when I was overseas, I called Joe for an emergency plumbing job under my rental. He came the same day and did the repair. I am glad to have someone to call and trust the job will be done correctly and fairly."

Getting Started in Planning Your Bathroom Remodel

A bathroom remodeling project can be as simple as changing the tiling or as complex as gutting and replacing everything in the room. That range of possibilities means you have to know exactly what you want before getting started in estimating your cost and finding bathroom remodelers near you. Here are a few tips to help your project get off the ground:

  1. Know your goal. What about your bathroom do you want to change? Are you simply looking for an update, or an entirely new room? Will you need a new shower, tub, or both?
  2. Find your style. Modern, contemporary bathrooms can be beautiful, but so can more elegant, classic alternatives. Find the style that matches both your preferences and the rest of your home. The type of bathroom also impacts your choices here; a guest bathroom will probably need a more neutral style than a lavish master bath retreat.
  3. Choose a layout. You might be constrained by the existing proportions of your room. But even within these proportions, you can still lay out your bathroom in a way that maximizes its function. Make sure that you can fit everything you want and need, while still having enough room to comfortably maneuver in the space.

Of course, the right bathroom contractor can help you determine these steps, and provide you with some options to get started. But if you at least have a general idea about each of the above points, you can more easily find a remodeler that will help you build a beautiful, new bathroom retreat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

The average bathroom remodel ranges between $6,000 and $15,000. Your budget may be as little as $3,500 for a small powder room or as large as $25,000 for a large master bathroom.

Labor alone is between $40 and $75 per hour, and accounts for about 50% of the entire project. In an area with a thriving real estate market, those prices could be up to 20% higher. The rest of the budget consists of materials and features.

The size of your bathroom, quality of the features, and amount of plumbing required can all increase project costs.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

The average bathroom remodel takes about 3 to 4 weeks of full-time labor, including all plumbing. It can be as short as one week for a simple paint or tiling job, or as long as 3 months for a comprehensive remodel of a large space.

What is the cheapest way to remodel a bathroom?

A bathroom remodel is almost always expensive, but you can take a few cost-saving steps:

  • Keep the layout identical to avoid plumbing work.
  • Substitute cheaper materials like vinyl flooring, laminate countertops and faux-stone tiles.
  • Refinish your tub instead of buying a new one.
  • Buy prefabricated features instead of custom sizes.
  • Refresh existing vanities with new hardware and faucets.
  • Offer to help the contractor, if permitted, to save on labor costs.

What questions should I ask bathroom remodelers?

  • Do you take on projects like mine?
  • What's your timeline for completion?
  • Can I see examples of your work?
  • Will your price change after you start the work?
  • Will your job include demolition?
  • Will you subcontract some of the work, like plumbing?
  • Do you trust your subcontractors?
  • Do you and your subcontractors have active licenses and insurance?
  • Will my projects need permits, and can you get them?
  • Do you offer a warranty after completion of the job?
