Here's an annotated version of that video with extra links, notes and code samples: I think this is now the best answer I have to the question "what is Datasette?"

Even better: they had it happen twice! Once in March 2011 and once in April 2014. Which suggests that they didn't manage to come up with a QA process even for that specific spider species.

I love this because I cannot imagine any QA process, no matter how thorough, that would have caught it "Did you check ALL of the different spider species to make sure none of them inexplicably loved making their webs in it? Are you sure?"

I've been using that workflow to hack on Datasette tools and plugins (see ) and I really like it - wondering if the same flow would actually be a neat way of developing and installing entire Django projects, not just reusable apps

Anyone ever tried packaging up a private Django project using setup-dot-py such that it can be installed using "pip install URL-to-zipfile", and developed on using "pip install -e ." in that repository checkout?

This blog entry about how GitHub migrated their own engineering team over is inspiring - they eventually got new environments down to sub-10-seconds by pre-configuring a pool of environments ready for people to reserve on demand

The idea of a new coworker having a fully working development environment within minutes of starting work on a new project feels like a dream come true - this kind of thing is going to save SO much time and money

This is exciting to see, but it's a shame you have to register an account in order to view the freely available newspaper pages - it means you can't share links to them, which greatly reduces their potential impact

In part of the dream I was being walked through the history of their web technology by a developer and it turned out that the oldest, most derided piece of the stack was remnants of a CMS I had worked on 15 years ago It was very vivid!

Just woke from a nightmare where I had accepted a job with a prominent newspaper only to find out that their technical strategy was to move away from "old fashioned server-side page generation" and rebuild everything as an SPA

As I say in every single iteration of Stuff Everybody Knows: if the purpose of your website is to show somebody arriving from a search engine a thing they can buy as fast as possible, a rich web app is not what you want.

I talked to an in-house lawyer once who was incredibly sharp on what was needed around the (at the time new) GDPR - I asked what their secret was and they said that they had been swapping notes with similar lawyers at a bunch of other Bay Area tech companies

I call this kind of support group a "cabal" - when you get together with a few people in similar roles to you at other companies and privately swap notes and help coach each other Really effective way of leveling up!

I'm usually not a fan of API reference docs like this because they so often sit alone, unaccompanied by docs that actually tell you how to use the library sqlite-utils already has extensive narrative docs though, which I can link to from the API reference

This is the first time I've configured sphinx-autodoc for a project, so I wrote up a detailed TIL of the steps it took to get this working, including how I got them to build on

Added class API reference documentation to sqlite-utils today, using sphinx-autodoc The project already has detailed narrative prose docs, but since autodoc uses docstrings this was an excuse to firm those up (and add more type hints too) - good for IDEs
