    It's a weirdly autarkic way of thinking about this problem. Countries that have large trade surpluses aren't obviously more resilient to external collapse, IMO — they lose *income*, whereas deficit countries only lose a source of goods imports. Food is a special case, to be sure.

    Hilarious. The U.K. hasn't been self-sufficient in food since the early 19th century.

    The UK is fifth, driven largely by its potential to survive rather than its demonstrated ability. The nation could considerably increase its renewable energy and agricultural capabilities, though it currently imports nearly half of its food and lags on wind and solar adoption.

    Instead of a pointless dick-measuring contest about which state had the toughest lockdown, we should be demanding clarity about the kind of workplaces transmission is happening in, and targeted restrictions to deal with that

    Covid doesn’t care which state has harsher restrictions. The concern is that day after day, premier and CHO state the drivers of transmission are essential workers and household visits, without announcing additional measures.
