New roof and repair of chimney was undertaken because of older shingles and a recurrent leak into a second story bedroom near a chimney on my stucco house. There was visible chimney damage prior to the job. Initial responsiveness through salesman was timely and informative. The job was scheduled for the fall and into winter if necessary, and I chose Squires because their shingle composition allows work during cold weather (less brittle). The original contract (approx 11/07) included evaluation and repair of the chimney, with the estimate for the chimney work "TBA," and to be done by a company subcontractor. Initial delays in beginning the work were because the mason and roofers' schedules could not be matched, and because no estimate from the mason was provided. Then the weather got too bad to do either part of the job. When the weather broke transiently after Christmas, roofers began and finished shingling, but could not complete the flashing because the mason was not available. Then the weather got bad again (blizzards, sleet), so masonry couldn't be done. Then the mason was not available because of a family illness. By that time the weather had warmed up but become quite wet, so the inside leak became bad enough that further damage to inside plaster and paint occurred. The company eventually responded to my concerns when I insisted on talking with the president and explained that I did not want to get the mason with family issues in trouble, but expected the company to have a backup plan (specifically, finding another mason). They then quickly located another mason, who came out, did a thorough evaluation of the outside work needs and inside damage, gave an estimate for the work needed, and a crew was sent out to wrap the chimney in plastic until the weather improved enough for him to do the repairs. Eventually the contracted work was completed very well, including repair of the inside damage. I am now very satisfied with the quality of the job, including cleanup. However, I would only use the company again if I could be fairly sure that coordination of services would be easily done.
