This is the first Amazon tablet I've ever owned (several fireTVs in the house though) and after today's setup process I am really frustrated with software design, hence the 3 stars.
You can't just add local profiles to the tablet. Normal profiles have to be an actual person, with an Amazon account that they can log into, and only two adults can have accounts on the tablet. You can then only add up to four child profiles (they don't need Amazon accounts). All child accounts (anyone under 18) has to use the Freeview software to filter and protect their activities. You cannot turn off Freeview (even if your kid is older and doesn't need cutsie colorful icons), and if you delete that child account later everything they did/bought/downloaded is also gone. You can't just turn it into a "normal" account. And you can't just create a new Amazon account for the kid to make it a "normal" profile, because you can only have 2 adult profiles on the tablet.
Freeview on the child profiles also prevents you from allowing apps to use certain permissions. Today during setup I spent well over an hour trying to figure out how to get Facebook Messenger for Kids working on my 10 year old's profile. Answer: you can't. Freeview won't allow the permissions needed for an app for kids to run on a child's profile. I thought it was great that we could have separate accounts, but now he has to use my own profile just to get the software to work. It's a failure on Amazon's part to restrict a parent's account from setting specific permissions on specific apps.
For reading, this is a great device. The 10 inch display is a little big for me, so if I were able to change anything it would be to get the smaller device to be a little more portable. I like the various features in the Kindle app and like how I can use the blue light filter for reading at night.
For watching movies this is a great tablet. The picture is clear and big enough to thoroughly enjoy the experience. This is one reason why I am happy I went with the 10 inch display.
For quality of this product, I believe it is definitely you get what you pay for. I wanted a cheap tablet that I will be able to read and watch movies on and this fits the bill. It does not feel fragile, the back is plastic, but works great. I usually do not have issues with dropping stuff, so we will see how it handles that when it comes.
Ease of use on this took a little time to get used to. This is mainly due to being used to the way android phones are set up, and my only other tablet was an iPad. but once I got the hang of how things work it is second nature. I got the one that has special offers, which means I do see adds on the lock display, but they do not bother me and I do not have issues with accidently clicking it when opening the tablet. One thing I do really like is that the screen is not touch sensitive when you lock the tablet. This helps when carrying it around with me at the lakes, or at work.
UPDATE: Kudos to Amazon. After I submitted the review above, I got a phone call from a real, live person who apologized and sent me a link for the right charger (at no cost to me). All resolved, and my husband continues to love his tablet!
