I have had ROKU and Android boxes in the past and now switched over to Amazon Fite TVs.
Given a choice, buy fireTV in a heartbeat as it is hands down the best one of all:
1. You can side load most Android app from the Google Play store
2. Quad core CPU = fast load times
3. You can install all kinds of streaming players, like VLC, Kodi and more.
4. Amazon day sale can get it down to $30
5. The remote is not IR, but wi-fi, so no need to point it.
6. Small form factor, no need for the power supply, just connect to TV USB.
7. Open Amazon APIs
8. Built-in bluetooth for keyboard, headphones, etc.
9. Dolby Vision with HDR, Dolby Atmos sound
10. I can go on…. , but this is already enough (edited)
Truthfully, the Fire TV command for this one simple thing is broken. I have a last year model TV (LG CX OLED 65") so you would think that Fire integrates with this flawlessly since this is a smart TV and and as close to the latest model as you can reasonably expect. However, Fire TV and Alexa integration with my TV seems unexpectedly and sadly broken.
I will be fair and say I was able to get the "Power On TV" command to work hands-free, even though that was a little tricky in itself -- however, the one frustrating thing is that it automatically switches to the Fire TV Home input, no matter what settings I choose. This was extremely troublesome for me and defeats the whole point of me purchasing this product, as that's all I honestly needed it for. If I have to switch back to the previous input on the TV (before "Power Off") using the voice button on the Fire TV remote, then that defeats the whole point of me manually turning on the smart TV. In fact, pressing the 'Power' button on the remote would easily be twice as painless. I'll go ahead and list the steps I followed below to get hands-free 'Power' control of the TV set up, just for fairness sake.
1. I made sure HDMI-CEC was enabled on my smart TV. The steps will probably vary depending on the brand or model of the TV but in my case I found that under Settings -> All Settings -> Connection -> Device Connection Settings -> SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) and set that to 'ON' -- note that it was disabled by default. I have no idea why they hide this option under so many setting menus, but I'm hoping the process is a little bit simpler on other smart TV models.
2. I plugged in the Fire TV stick into one of the HDMI inputs on my smart TV (HDMI 3) and the other cable to a power source.
3. I powered on my TV and navigated to HDMI 3. Alexa was able to quickly set up the latest software for the Fire TV within 5 minutes.
4. I was notified that the Fire TV device had been added to my Alexa account, but I also went into my Alexa app and added the new device to the same group as the Echo that I wanted to voice control my Fire TV with. I also confirmed I had the Fire TV skill enabled.
5. What I realized was speaking phrases to the Echo Dot like "Alexa, turn the TV on/off" or "Alexa, turn Fire TV on/off" didn't work at all. I also confirmed that both the Fire TV and my Echo were added to the same group in the Alexa app, but still no dice.
6. At this point, what I figured out was that *another* device was added to my list of devices, and it was named something similar to "<My Name>'s 2nd Fire TV" (since I already have a previous model from a few years ago). It had a TV icon in the app.
7. Based on suggestions from looking online, I next went into my Alexa app and navigated to 'Settings -> TV & Video -> Fire TV -> Link or manage Devices' and then Linked the above device with my Echo device.
8. I went ahead and tested out this voice command with my Echo, by saying "Turn <this device> on/off". It seemingly worked perfectly fine. So I went ahead and renamed this device and added it to the same group as my Echo.
9. Now I can use a custom name to control my smart TV, and that works as expected.
The only caveat with the above steps is that turning on the TV will always, without fail switch to the Home input for the Fire TV. But still, I wanted to go over the entire process I used to get hands-free power control on my smart TV. However, this introduced the main problem that I struggled with, which was how to get Fire TV to only turn on my smart TV and not switch inputs back to the Home input (HDMI 3). Towards that end, I attempted to follow the below steps to get it set up in this way.
1. Went to the Fire TV Home (HDMI 3) on my smart TV.
2. Under 'Settings' on the top right of my Fire TV, I went to the 'Equipment Control -> Manage Equipment' page.
3. Under 'Manage Equipment' I then went under 'Fire TV' and selected 'HDMI 1', as I wanted it to automatically switch to this input when turning on my TV. Note that HDMI 3 was the Fire TV Home input in my case, and I did not want to automatically navigate to this input. The tooltip for this option said "Change which inputs we switch to for watching Fire TV", so I thought that would be sensible option.
4. However, after trying on the hands-free power on TV again, it completely ignored the setting and navigated back to Fire TV Home (HDMI 3). So nope, that setting didn't seem to do what I wanted. In fact it didn't seem to apply any changes at all, which was a bit unexpected.
5. The Next thing I tried, under the 'Manage Equipment' page I went to 'Advanced Settings -> Power On Input' and here I selected 'TV Default' so that it only turns on my TV and doesn't attempt to switch back automatically to the Home Input (HDMI 3). I thought for this sure this might work.
6. Unfortunately, this seemed like an even worse option, in that it actually seemed to break some things that had previously been working. So in this case, after I used the voice command "Alexa, turn <my device> off", it successfully turned off my smart TV, but after that it was not able to start it back up. Repeating "Alexa, turn <my device> on" didn't seem to do anything either.
The Alexa integration with Fire TV was now a bust after I had successfully updated the settings as above. Pressing the power button on the Fire TV remote stick still worked, of course. It also worked if I depressed the microphone button the Fire TV remote once, and then released it and repeated my voice command to Echo. But obviously, that would defeat the whole point of "hands-free" voice control if I needed to fool around with the voice button on the remote each time I wanted to turn my smart TV on. And honestly, if I can reach to press the voice button, wouldn't it be easier to just press the power button that was right next to it? That way I could turn on the smart TV and do away with the need for a spoken command -- but that would also mean I would be right back to where I started.
Not being able to turn on the TV and have it retain the last input is the last of my problems however, as I quickly found. At around the same point I also realized that trying to switch inputs hands-free didn't work either. For example, "Alexa, go to HDMI1 on <name of device>" or "Alexa, go home on <name of device>". Here's a sample command that I tested out with my Echo below:
Me: "Alexa, switch to HDMI 2"
Alexa (on Echo): "I'm not quite sure what went wrong"
Thanks Alexa, that's very helpful. Let me inconvenience myself by pressing the microphone button on the Fire TV remote and repeating the same command. Oh well, I can say at least that works, but for some reason there seems to be a broken link when I try that command hands-free. That's still a pretty noteworthy defect, but not as glaring as the fact that I can't use my Fire TV stick for the one thing I bought it for: to just simply turn on my dang smart TV hands-free.
Clearly, I will be returning this product as it did not match my relatively basic expectations. Perhaps I will shell out for some sort of an IR blaster product after all, not sure. One thing I do know though is it will not be an Alexa product though. It's a shame because the other features that it offers like being able to stream Netflix etc. are really useful too. But if it can't deliver on a simple voice command in the year 2021, then unfortunately all its other features are rendered essentially meaningless to me.
In closing, the 4K Fire TV stick (refurbished model or otherwise) does not integrate well at all with the 2020 LG smart TV model (LG CX) that I currently own. Basic commands like "Alexa, switch to input <name of input>" do not work. The command "<name of TV> on/off" works but it will without fail always switch to the Fire TV Home input, which is especially annoying when you use the TV in question mainly for gaming. To achieve this basic use I would probably go with a WiFi-controlled IR blaster instead and set it up in the Alexa app, as Fire TV does not appear to be the right tool for this purpose. The voice control feature and integration with Alexa itself is clearly broken in some important respects, and settings on the Fire TV Home don't always do what you would expect them to do. I will as mentioned be returning this product as it was definitely not the right fit for me, but it's likely that if you don't care about these features that were mentioned then overall it might be a good fit for others out there.
