E-learning Business Lead, Sensei

We are looking for an entrepreneurial-minded business lead to join our team and set the vision and growth strategy for Automattic’s e-learning business, Sensei LMS. 

The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader who is passionate about e-learning and has a proven track record of successfully building and growing an early stage business. 

What You’ll Do

In partnership with the product and engineering team, the business lead will drive continuous improvement and competitive success by analyzing and leveraging marketplace data, identifying new features, conducting competitive analysis, and developing key external partnerships. The goal of the role is to help build the product into a competitive offering that captures and retains customers while growing product revenue. 

Key Focus Areas

Leadership and Team Cultivation

  • Communicate upward (Automattic), inward (team members), and outward (industry partners and customers) to create alignment around shared goals.
  • Work collaboratively across all levels of the organization, leveraging key internal resources.
  • Empower and retain talent by cultivating an outstanding culture.
  • Set clear, achievable goals for yourself and the team.
  • Utilize Automattic’s expertise and best practices in distributed work.

Business Planning and Analytics

  • Build and communicate a clear vision and plan for the future of Sensei, driving product growth.
  • Deliver monthly, quarterly, and annual financial performance updates to the division lead.
  • Maintain healthy and predictable growth by establishing and consistently meeting execution milestones.
  • Continuously monitor performance and iterate to improve outcomes across product development, pricing, customer acquisition/retention, and future strategies.

Product Development / Design / Marketing

  • Align product development, design, and marketing functions to define differentiated offerings and provide a world-class offering for users.
  • Collaborate with the team to define, refine, and improve the product vision, value proposition, and product roadmap, with a focus on growing user acquisition, retention, and engagement.
  • Work with the marketing team to create a robust customer acquisition strategy and execute on near- and long-term growth plans. 
  • Establish and maintain brand touchpoints - including websites, social channels and marketplace outposts - to engage customers across segments.

What You’ll Bring

  • A passion for democratizing online learning and experience working in the e-learning space.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and executive communication skills.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit with a high level of energy and dedication, and an unrelenting drive to succeed and win.
  • An exceptional ability to identify and break down problems to find unique solutions and remove single points of failure.
  • The ability to take ownership of decisions while involving others in the decision-making process.
  • Empathy and honesty; you keep your word, care about fellow teammates, and do what’s right.
  • Comfort with constant change and curiosity about tomorrow.
  • Experience operating a business within the WordPress ecosystem is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Proven success leading high performance teams in multiple geographic locations, preferably across multiple departments and through periods of rapid scale.
  • Experience in developing, operationalizing, and managing an early stage business.
  • Strong commercial acumen with P&L exposure/experience as an operational leader, working closely with growth and cost decisions.
  • Experience driving consensus for your strategy while owning the results.
  • Experience bringing strategy from concept to life through coordinated action across all departments of an organization, regardless of team location.
  • An innovative and forward-thinking mindset with strong market and product instincts.

  • Ability to Travel. We value those rare occasions when we meet our colleagues in person. Normally, we require 2–3 non-consecutive weeks of travel per year, usually by plane. Currently, company travel is suspended to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 crisis, and we’re exploring new, remote ways to stay connected.
