Nelsen Best and his colleague were wonderful. They arrived right on time and proceeded through my list of repairs. All repairs were done professionally. They went above and beyond by fixing things that I had not noticed as they completed other repairs.

JD Locksmith And Doors

Joshua was very prompt and communicative. He refuted the issue we brought him out to repair, identified the correct problem and repaired the door. We then had another issue with our front lock and he fixed the tumbler and provided additional non=duplicating keys. Both of these problems had been “repaired” by other locksmiths. His pricing was very fair and we could not be happier.

Very professional and performed all requests within time and budget. Estimate was for 4 hours to do 3 different repairs, but the repairman was actually able to complete it (and I was only charged for) 3 hours. Work was done well, and clean-up was very good. I would certainly recommend JW and would use them again!

Our technician was on time and sealed our storm door to prevent water from leaking in. He also fixed the lock and the screen door on our sliding glass doors making them finally functional again and taught us how to grease the sliding door so it runs smoother. Excellent work and completed in a timely fashion.

Dwight was great to work with. He was very friendly, immediately had ideas about how to fix the problem, and was able to fix the door quickly and without much disruption to our workday. He was professional and clearly has a lot of knowledge and understanding of home repair. If his initial fix idea hadn't worked, he had other solutions in mind and was well prepared. Overall, he was a pleasure to work with and we will certainly use his services again.

Jim the Handyman

We have used Jim the Handyman several times over the years - they have always completed their work properly, on time and on budget. I thought I needed new slider doors, and they told me they could swap out the wheels which worked well. They also repaired our attic/roofline where some squirrels had chewed through and you can't even tell where it happened. We will continue to use them for projects large and small.

Two hours or handymen service really means TWO guys in your house for ONE hour. I had no problem with that. They worked fast to get the job done. I love the fact that I did not have to wait for months to get the neighborhood handyman into my house to do the little tasks. All I would say is accumulate your tasks to get your monies worth. This crew worked fast and re insalled a bi fold door, re piped my dryer vent, fixed my heavy closet sliding door, and fixed a kitchen door drawer and that annoying panel that fell off at the kitchen sink. They were done so fast, next time I will have them replace all these annoying light bulbs in my kids closet that are a pain in the a*** to replace.

Excellent! Sam and Brian were my initial contacts and were professional and helpful. Manuel H. did the repairs, was excellent, and one of the best who I have worked with. I highly recommend all of these people and this company. They do high quality work in a timely and professional manner. They are slightly more expensive than other contractors, but it is worth it given their service quality and promptness. I had nor worries or stress about my repairs once I hired them.

Excellent experience! Ferny was right on time to give me a fair estimate for some minor work to be done repairing doors, fixing drywall, and painting over it. We promptly agreed to his estimate and he returned just about an hour later to do the job (the timing worked for us). Ferny and Carlos exceeded all of our expectations: the work was flawless and fast, and they left the place sparkling clean. Another issue regarding a leak came up while Ferny was still in the house. Lucky for us, Ferny was willing to consult on the problem and provided a quick fix at no extra charge, along with suggestions on how to avoid the problem in the future. I would absolutely recommend Ferny for your handyman needs, and I'm grateful to have finally found someone to rely on for handyman work in DC.

Felix showed up on time and completed several items on my to-do list. He did an excellent repair of an area of the ceiling that was damaged (which I had made worse trying to fix it myself), fixed a closet bi-fold door, cut and installed shoe moulding in my closet, installed bathroom mirror, replaced boards on fence, secured stair railing. Felix was very professional and did a great job - I would hire them again..

It was a little hard to set up the appointment, but all went very well after that. They fixed two interior doors that would not close/latch, and gave me options for how the door that would not close could be fixed. They also installed weatherstripping on a door that led from the apartment to the balcony. I was very pleased with their professionalism and the quality of the work.

Both interior and exterior doors can require door repair from either wear and tear, or from some family event (moving, roughhousing, enthusiastic slamming). Door repair from professional handy services is usually based on the door type and the category of damage.

Types of Doors

Exterior doors are almost always made from solid wood, metal, fiberglass or metal-clad wood. They are designed to be secure, so glass area is kept to a minimum.  Security glass is a welcome feature in front and back doors.

Interior doors, because they do not have to safeguard a house, can be just about any material:

  • Decorative aluminum
  • Bamboo
  • PVC
  • FRP (fiber reinforced plastic)
  • All glass
  • Ledged and batten (a rustic look)

In addition to the material, doors can open and close in different ways:

  • Hinged (right-hand swing and left-hand swing)
  • Pocket (sliding sideways within the wall)
  • Dutch (split horizontally)
  • Roller (like garage doors)
  • Sliding
  • Bi-fold

Common Door Repair Issues

Exterior doors sustain damage from vandalism and attempted break-ins. Decorative features like plastic laminates can also be damaged by direct sunlight.

Interior doors generally sustain damage from carelessness (punched holes in the thin veneer; opening the door too wide).

All types of doors may require hinge replacement, new passage sets or keyed locks, or refinishing. High humidity can cause doors to stick.

Costs of Door Repair

The national average cost of door repair is $221, but you may find a range of $118 to $325 depending on the carpenter or local service you engage.
