What is a cookie and where does it come from?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer for the purpose of identifying your web browser to a website or network. Cookies are placed on your computer when you visit or register with certain websites. Cookies help to enable certain functions on websites, such as shopping carts, login-based sessions, and advertising. A cookie file is extremely small, usually less than 1kb in size.

Cookies are not software and thus cannot install adware or spyware onto your computer or make it more susceptible to viruses.

Why does RhythmOne use cookies?

RhythmOne may use cookies to improve your Web browsing experience, and to help better target ads. When you are first served a RhythmOne ad, RhythmOne may assign a unique random number to your computer browser – commonly known as a “cookie.” We do this to understand the way a user responds to the ads we deliver. For example, this number lets us keep track of how many times you view an ad we distribute. Likewise, the cookie can help make sure you do not see the same ad over and over – thus enhancing your online Web viewing experience.

We cannot and do not use our cookies to obtain any personally identifiable information. We do not link the information we store in cookies to any personally identifiable information you submit while on our sites. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that use if you desire.

RhythmOne will never use cookies to:

Alter your internet experience, other than to show you a targeted display ad on sites within our Network

Collect personally identifiable information such as your name and address, phone number, email address, social security number, credit card number, and so forth

How does RhythmOne set cookies?

A RhythmOne cookie is placed into your internet browser’s cache folder when you visit a website that is a member of the RhythmOne Network. That cookie is represented by the name RhythmOne Medianet.com

What does a RhythmOne cookie look like on my computer?

This is what a RhythmOne cookie might look like in the cache file of your internet browser:

  • Name = TID
  • ID = 00g3iga14p0oku
  • Domain = burstnet.com

How long does RhythmOne retain users’ cookie data?

RhythmOne currently collects non personally identifiable information such as advertisements viewed/clicked, Urls of web pages visited, Anonymous User IDs, time of day as well as cookie Data that could represent activities that have been performed in the past. This information is collected via our technology and stored for up to 2 years for the purpose of:

  1. Analyzing campaign results
  2. Ensuring that our technology is functioning properly
  3. Preventing fraud across our sites

How can I opt out of the RhythmOne cookie?

In an effort to respect your privacy, RhythmOne gives all internet users the choice to opt-out of receiving RhythmOne cookies. If you opt out, your web browser will be associated with a generic “opt-out” cookie, which will prevent us from associating any non-personally identifiable information with your browser. RhythmOne Media’s “opt-out” cookie has a five year expiration date. Keep in mind that participating in our opt-out program does not prevent you from seeing ads served by RhythmOne Media; instead, the ads we serve to you will not be targeted to you based on your web surfing experiences.

If you would like to opt out, please visit our Cookie Opt-out Program. Alternatively, you may also choose to opt out of the RhythmOne Network through the Network Advertising Initiative’s Consumer Opt-Out Program.

As described above, RhythmOne Media’s Opt-out Program is cookie-based, so you may need to opt out again (and set a new “opt-out” cookie) if you do any of the following:

  • Delete your cookies
  • Block cookies, including third party cookies
  • Switch internet browsers
  • Change computers
  • Upgrade your web browser
