We had a really positive experience with GAL. The entire crew - from the lead all the way across the team - were universally polite, skilled, hardworking and did a really good job. It was a ton of work and although there were a few mistakes along the way, as always happens, they were never anything less than fully reasonable and accommodating about fixing them.

GAL and Casey were amazing! We could not be more pleased with the quality of the work and the customer care and communication. Our yard, patio, and walkway are well-built and beautiful. Our landscape architect (NOT from GAL) disappeared on us before the job was completely finished. Casey, going above and beyond, stepped into the void and picked up where she had left off. Highly recommend!

They have done work for me in the past, but he keeps going up. I was very dis-threatened about it. You would think a repeat customer they would get a better rate, but it was not like that at all. I did the mulch myself for $280. The overall work is good, and they do clean up after themselves. They were fast to reply. They were right on time too. If they weren't so high priced, they would be a great company.

I selected Great American Landscapes because they worked with me to find the right solution to correct a flawed egress. Casey was great to work with and the team of installers did a fantastic job. Each associate of Great American Landscapes was polite, professional and respectful. My yard looked so much better when they were done. I would definitely hire them again.

Success! Laundry room has not flooded since.
Description of Work
We had a large patio (20x10) and small deck (5x10) that sloped in towards our house, flooding the laundry room every time we had a bit of rain. We hired the company to tear out the patio, re-grade back area near laundry room, install a drain for any excess water that happened to stand near the house, and re-sod that whole area.

If there were a higher rating, i would give Great American Landscapes an A+ in quality and service and cost. Craig Corbett was highly professional, dedicated and ensured outstanding results. He recommended bushes that were more artistic and beautiful than other estimates that I received. The cost was very good compared to four other estimates that I had obtained. All debris was hauled away. Marvin is a gifted landscaper and went above and beyond to accomplish a superior landscaping result. Initially the stone steps were not done the way I wanted, but Craig went above and beyond to re-do the steps with a superior end result. I feel like my satisfaction was guaranteed. I felt like they really cared and wanted to do an outstanding job. I would use their service again without question and would highly recommend Great American Landscapes to others.

Outstanding. The work was well done and on schedule. They were able to take my very basic and limited instructions and come up with the exact design I wanted but didn't know how to describe very well. Kurt was a real pleasure to work with; he was very professional, thorough, communicated with me regularly, stayed on top of the project every step of the way, and truly took ownership of the job. He even came to the house when another company was removing a large tree and roots to make sure THEY did their job right and didn't cut any corners! I thought that was amazing. The crew was very professional and did high quality work. I wish every company was exactly like Great American Landscapes, or else I wish that Great American Landscapes did everything (not just landscape) because this company is the best I've dealt with. If I'm going to do work on my house and they happen to do that type of work, then I am definitely going with them.
Description of Work
Total landscape overhaul and redesign plus on-going landscape maintenance. Our yard was a hodgepodge of random plants, flowers, shrubs, planters boxes, and basically looked like a jungle. Lovely and all, but no rhyme or reason and required a lot of upkeep. Great American removed all the unwanted plants and wood boxes, transplanted many other plants to better locations to improve the overall look and design of the front and back yards. Replaced wood retaining wall with beautiful stone retaining wall. Replaced hardscape landing area that was in poor condition with beautiful flag stone, re-graded slope of backyard and built new stone retaining wall. Planted new plants in various areas. Installed underground drain pipe. Put down sod in large areas where trees were removed or where previously there was gravel. Basically, gutted the place and created a much better designed and more maintainable outdoor space that better suited our taste and style.

We worked with someone who came across very nicely in our initial phone consult and who appeared to be listening to us when he came by the house to get a sense of our hopes for the property. He initially quoted us $200-$300 for the initial consult fee and drawing up a proposed sketch for the outdoor space. He said that fee would be waived if we go with their services. When he came to our house for a meeting, though, he switched it to a $500 fee for the sketches and said it could not be waived if we go with their services. After I called him out on it, he retracted and said it could be waived and made some joke about how he has a big mouth (which made me start to feel like he's not being honest but trying to take advantage once he saw we were genuinely interested in the services). We told him that our budget was $20,000-$30,0000 which is A LOT if you knew how small our backyard is. This guy came back with a proposal that was $45,000! Not including a tree removal that we desperately wanted (estimated at $12500 for tree removal plus something like $6000 for the permit!!). It seemed like he was inflating costs. We have a brand new wooden deck the former owners built, and he said it was "warped" and should be removed (the landscapers we used said it wasn't warped at all and that some of the clips holding the wood in place had twisted out of position). He proposed removing the deck and putting in $17,000 worth of stone patio... it was a huge size, consuming half the grassy backdoor space. He also skipped important things in the proposal... for instance, he said he'd repave the walkway from the kitchen door to the garage, but when I asked if it included the landing at the kitchen door, he said it didn't... so his plan was to pave one portion of the walkway and leave a big part of it original and terrible-looking? I got worried not only that he was inflating the prices, but that we would be charged more as the work progressed and we realized that certain things weren't "included" in the original estimate. There were other examples of this but I won't belabor the point. We ultimately went with another company which I can't recommend highly enough. They got a proposal right in our budget, got done everything we wanted done, and felt like honest brokers. It's a professional company with gardening stores in different locations in Bethesda and Maryland, so it's not like we did the project on the "cheap" without landscape architects. In sum, as a new homeowner, I felt like this guy was trying to take advantage of us by up-selling. I only wish I had called him out on the $500 drawing fee because we didn't end up going with them and had to eat that. This other company we went with did an even better sketch (using modern software) and charged only $100! That made me realize just how much the guy at Great American Landscapes took advantage of us. Blech.

Service Provider Response

We apologize to for any misunderstanding. We take great pride in our reputation and the quality of service we provide our clients. February and March are a very busy time for our sales reps and, in this case, the sales rep did not keep notes from his initial telephone conversation with and simply forgot his original price quote for the consult fee and design. This was an unfortunate mistake and we understand why was confused. However, as ideas were discussed and a design/estimates were prepared it became clear that their wish list would exceed their budget. For example, they wanted a tree removed from the rear yard to create a lawn for children to play. The is very large tree, access to the tree is extremely limited, and in DC, you have to pay a very expensive tree removal fee (it's not negotiable by DC). We are not a tree removal company, so we obtained a price quote from a very reputable tree removal company. Talk about "shooting the messenger!" During follow-up meetings we presented various ideas and budget options from which they could select their priorities and build a budget. Without going into the limitations of their existing deck or the floating concrete kitchen door landing, we believe our sales representative's intent was not to up-sell them but to help them refine their design choices to meet budget. This is an unfortunate example of a client and sales rep not building trust during the decision making process. We are very happy that they finalized a scope of work that fit their budget and found another company to perform the work.

Great American Landscape did a fantastic job at our home. We contacted them via Angie's List and we received a very prompt response from Steven Talcott. He met with us within days and provided a plethora of ideas for what we could do with our yard. He was very considerate of our time, our budget and our skill level when it came to plant maintenance. We originally just wanted a walkway but after speaking with him and seeing the "story" we could create in our front yard we decided to build a walkway and to do some landscaping along the walkway to our front porch and around the porch. Steven provided very detailed and beautiful design options and then worked with us to choose what would be best for us. He was very knowledgeable about plant options including shade lovers and those that deer don't like - problems in our yard. My biggest praise for Steven is that he never pushed us to purchase anything he just provided us options, was very timely, very polite, very friendly and very patient. GAL kept us up to date on the schedule and the start date and even checked in with us before they started to be sure that all our questions were answered. The work that was done was beautiful at every stop of the process. The workers were timely and very neat. The end result is beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Steven suggested a circular design element in our walkway that is absolutely gorgeous. The walkway is beautiful and very inviting and the landscaping is absolutely beautiful. Steven followed up the completion of the work with a visit to ensure our satisfaction and to give us a tutorial on how to take care of our plants, bushes and trees. I really can't say enough about our satisfaction - I would highly recommend them.

Landscaper's work was fair at best, there were plants that were not cut back, weeds still in place and overall job is not up to what we had expected (we had used them for a number of years but our client representative, who was great, left and the new representative was very unresponsive and when we contacted the owner/general manager, got no response at all). We tried to contact them to have them come back and despite emails and contact through their customer service website, we had no response. We also never received a proposal for the additional work. We eventually sent them notice that we were canceling the contract and still did not hear from them. We would not use them again.
Description of Work
Landscaper was supposed to do a spring clean up, mulch, cut back bushes, etc. Also, at a meeting to walk the property, we requested an estimate for some additional work.

Service Provider Response

We very much regret that our relationship with this client has ended. Our success is and will always be predicated on providing outstanding services to our clients. This philosophy has proven to be successful during the 32 years we have been in business, as we have enjoyed thousands of very satisfied and happy design build and maintenance clients. Unfortunately, sometimes clients expect additional services at no cost, and sometimes we have to make the difficult business decision to say no.

When I called to inquire about landscaping services, the person who answered was not polite. I will not post her name out of consideration. I suspect she thought I was a solicitous call, but she was rude and snarky. I wonder if this business understands that first impressions are everything, and that it all starts at hello.

The service went fine. We had a particular drainage problem. The designer gave an idea of what they could do to correct the problem. It was a good opinion and I had no objections. The cost was much higher than we could afford at the time. I still may consider using them in the future. The designer was prompt and professional. I had no problem scheduling the deal.

Our backyard is relatively small and originally had a small flagstone patio, a little grass and some gardens. The key problem that we needed to solve was to maximize the hardscape, while maintaining sufficient life via the plants and gardens. GAL gave us a completely new and beautiful backyard! Kevin arrived the first day to listen to our goals and to share his initial thoughts on what we might want to do. His initial thoughts were great and creative, giving us much optimism to hear and see what he proposed more formally a few days later. At this meeting, he came prepared with a rough sketch of his proposed redesign of our back yard with price ranges for the key options. He also shared with us the sketch for a different design that would cost less money. He did not push us at all toward any of the higher priced options. Once we made our decisions, he provided us with more detailed plans that we shared with our HOA. After we received approval from the HOA, the work started and continued throughout the 6 days with precision, quality and consideration. It was amazing to watch GAL's crew of 3 resources working to transform our backyard, under the direction of a very experienced foreman. The attention to detail and professionalism exhibited by these people was at a level that I had never seen before in contractors. It is clear to me that this is because Kevin develops his employees very well and takes care of them as if they were members of his own family. Throughout the process, I had total confidence that GAL and its crew knew exactly what had to be done and that it would done very well. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work
Great American Landscapes (GAL) completely redid our backyard, with a beautiful design that took full advantage of what our relatively small back yard had to offer. GAL's work involved removing our small flagstone patio, regrading our entire yard, laying out about 500 sq ft of payer stones in a beautiful pattern with lots of soft curves, building a curve wall that worked nicely with the pavers (for the grill area) and building our beds for the new trees and bushes.

I was very pleased with the way the owner, and then the scheduler, communicated with me once I made the initial contact. Kurt came within a week to give an estimate . George contacted me a few days later to schedule a day for the work. Two workmen came within the two-hour window I was told to expect and completed the work within two or three hours, and the bedding looks neat and pretty.

This job went well from start to finish. The owner, Kevin O'Neill, was friendly, professional and altogether a pleasure to work with. Moreover, he turned my sterile-looking patio into something truly gorgeous. I had filled in my swimming pool using paving stones and was left with a large expanse of stone which made for an uninviting, drab-looking back yard. Kevin came up with a marvelous scheme to soften the place up, and it turned out to be even more beautiful than I could have imagined. The stonework is exquisite, the design superb, and his men were complete pros at what they do. I especially appreciated all the personal attention I received, for example, when Kevin spent a couple of hours shopping for the right pots with me and did not even charge me for his time. Finally, the overall price, which I thought was fair from the outset, only came in a few dollars above the estimate. As I told him, this was one of the few times I actually was glad to pay for the work that was done. .

A designer came to our property and talked to us about what kind of services we were interested. He appeared to carefully go through our property and take lots of notes, pictures, and make a drawing for him to use to prepare a plan/design.He seemed knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We are extraordinarily busy this year due to the extended cold weather which delayed the selling season. Our staff dropped the ball by not getting back to you in a timely fashion.

Great American Landscapes was okay. It was good but it wasn't so good for them because it was pretty long distance. It was within the same metropolitan area but on the other side of Washington D.C. I didn't hear a complain or anything but they had a long travel time. We didn't actually go for it with it at all. We wouldn't have been a good customer for them because we were too far away but they honored their commitment and it was valuable so it worked out fine. The cost was worthwhile.
