Change your background in a video meeting

To help limit distractions or make video meetings more interesting, you can change your background with a preset image, or replace it with your own image.

Note: People who join the video meeting and are not signed in to a Google Account, as well as those who need to ask to get admitted, can only change their background after the meeting starts. People who join an Education edition video meeting can’t select their own background images.

Change your background before a video meeting

  1. Open Google Meet.
  2. Select a meeting.
  3. On the bottom right of your self view, click Change Background .
  4. Choose an option:
    • To completely blur your background, click Blur your background .
    • To slightly blur your background, click Slightly blur your background .
    • To select a preuploaded background, click a background.
    • To upload your own image for your background, click Add Add and select an image.
  5. Click Join now.

Change your background during a video meeting

  1. On the bottom right of the Meet window, click More More.
  2. Click Change background and:
    • To completely blur your background, click Blur your background .
    • To slightly blur your background, click Slightly blur your background.
    • To select a preuploaded background, click a background.
    • To upload your own image for your background, click Add Add and select an image.

Note: Sensitive information might be visible when you change your background during a video meeting. Your camera turns on when you click to change the background. If you don’t see the change background option on your computer, see Change your background in Google Meet.

Why can’t I opt to change my background?

If you can’t view the Background blur option, you might not meet the following requirements:

  • A supported browser version:
    • Chrome version M84 or later on Windows, Mac, or Linux
    • Version M86 or later on Chrome OS
    • 32-bit Chrome on Windows not supported
  • Chrome hardware acceleration enabled
  • Browser supporting WebGL 2.0

Turn on hardware acceleration on Windows or Mac

  1. Open Chrome Browser.
  2. Click More ""and thenSettings.
  3. Next to Advanced, click the Down arrow "".
  4. Click System.
  5. Turn on Use hardware acceleration when available.
  6. Restart Chrome Browser.

Check WebGL 2.0 support

  1. Check if your browser supports WebGL 2.0 by visiting the WebGL Report.
  2. Verify that Major Performance Caveat is marked as No.

Your browser might disable WebGL if the device is unstable or cause crashes. You can’t enforce WebGL on unstable WebGL devices.
