"Zoom Impressions", the other side of Fatigue. Where to look, how close & high to sit relative to camera? & colleagues show looking at camera (as opposed to other faces or off screen) robustly improves social judgments. High camera angle helps too.

Making mixtapes from records requires a lot of patience. I can imagine this experience becoming part of an interactive museum exhibit if it isn't already. Might stop people getting annoyed when a song buffers for 3.5 seconds.

    6. Trying to capture the exact starting point of a track from vinyl is trial and error. It doesn't help when most tape decks take a few seconds to engage the recording head when hitting the record button. You also don't want huge gaps of silence between tracks.

    5. 'Bias Tune' appears to adjust the amount of high-end (treble) in the recording, but I'm not 100% sure. Did I mention that metal tapes (IV) ideally need to be played back on high-end decks to perfectly reproduce every detail?

Dolby has decided that it no longer wants to licence the technology. There is some debate amongst the audiophile community as to whether this technology made things sound better. Personally, I think it does and most commercial tape recordings use Dolby B!

    4. Dolby Noise Reduction reduces tape hiss. However, if you record using Dolby and play the tape back on a deck without Dolby processing the recording will sound awful. New tape decks no longer support Dolby Noise Reduction!

You might think, well why not keep the recording levels low? Well, keeping levels suitably high is important to reduce tape 'hiss' during quiet sections. Speaking of which..

    3. Audio levels between vinyl records vary massively so input levels have to be re-adjusted for every track. You basically need to listen to an entire track and check that an especially loud section doesn't distort the recording first.

    2. You have to record in real-time (I did realise 1. and 2. would be a thing before I started:))

    1. Second-generation analogue copies are not perfect even when using metal (type IV) tape (which is expensive) and a decent cartridge/turntable/phono stage. It's the equivalent of a photocopier making a copy of a copy.

I have a new appreciation for people who made mixtapes from vinyl records. It was a labour of love. A thread of technical challenges that are not all routed in the 1980s:

Every year I see this from publishers and funders. Every year we tell them to automate downtime or extensions during festive holidays. Every god-dam year they fail. It’s such a small ask when most reviews are provided free of charge!
