Two weeks from today join me for the best lessons I know on good design. We often repeat the same mistakes - and these stories and lessons from my entire career show a better way to improve how we make things. All are welcome.

AI is not magic. If you can't explain what it's doing, your company should absolutely not be building a business on it.

I used to think making a product easier to use saved people time which was good for the world. Then I wondered: where does all that saved time actually go for all those people? Maybe those people were already doing pretty well and there was "better good" to be done elsewhere?

If you are not a designer, but work with them: Think of the best designers you've worked with. What were some of their traits that you wish more designers shared?

How to torture your PM: 1. Once a week: double the scope, half the budget, or invent a new stakeholder. 2. Hack into their schedule doc and replace all the estimates with random numbers. 3. Demand everything ASAP, instead of when you need it.

We really can't say "that's a great UX" or "this is intuitive" without asking first who it's for and what problem it is supposed to solve. Which one of these is the best hammer? It all depends. (Photo by Hans Hollein)

Emerson, who was born today, was a big inspiration for me. Here are three of my favorite quotes: “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” “It is not the length of life, but the depth.” “Be silly. Be honest. Be kind.”
