Glyph origin[edit]
Historical forms of the character 邊 | |||
---|---|---|---|
Shang | Western Zhou | Warring States | Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han) |
Oracle bone script | Bronze inscriptions | Chu Slip and silk script | Small seal script |
The oracle bone script form consisted of 自 and 丙. Note 自 was the original form of 鼻 (OC *blids), and 自 and 丙 (OC *pqraŋʔ) were likely the phonetic components of the character.
The bronze inscription of 邊 (OC *mpeːn) consisted of 辵, 自, 丙 and 方. 辵 (“to walk”) and 方 (“side”) were likely the semantic components of the character, while 自 (the original form of 鼻 (OC *blids)) and 丙 (OC *pqraŋʔ) were the phonetic components.
The small seal script form was 𨘢, with the lower right component the result of corruption of 方.
Etymology 1[edit]
Perhaps cognate with 偏 (OC *pʰen, *pʰens, “side; oblique”), 片 (OC *pʰeːns, “partial; one-sided”), 諞 (OC *ben, *brenʔ, *benʔ, “glib-tongued; insincere”) (Schuessler, 2007).
