News:

  1. The Learn Working Group will begin merging the meetings into the training team meetings. Merging Learn Working Group into Training Team meetings
    @erica and @Hugh Lashbrooke have done a great deal around the workshops and the functionality of Learn. As part of flowing with where and when the people are present, and based upon feedback, it makes sense to consolidate the number of meetings. Look for agenda items around workshops and functionality to begin making their way into the Training Team meeting agendas soon.
  2. @courane01 has shared a High-Level Roadmap to Learn WordPress post. The post is dabbling with a way to map out what to learn in what order for new developers or new to WP.  Any kind of feedback is appreciated in the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/. post.
  3. @erica appended a comment to the Contributor Ladder – https://make.wordpress.org/training/2021/04/23/discussion-contributor-ladders-for-the-training-team-and-learn-wordpress/#comment-3015.  This is a segue into the user roles on Learn as well.
  4. The additional proposals in news – user roles – @erica has a doc in a draft state to help clarify what and why we need the unique roles on Learn. The training team had a discussion about what is needed as well for auditing content, and where #docs may overlap.  @courane01 will publish the proposal next week.

    Scope of Training Team – @andreamiddleton (she/her), @Hauwa Abashiya, @erica, @Hugh Lashbrooke, and @courane01 have been discussing creating a proposal to expand the scope and hope to open a discussion on the blog this week. Andrea will help draft that. Essentially when the Training Team formed, the goal was to create lesson plans.  A series of lesson plans would then be considered a workshop (think of a half or full single-day meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for �?WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area.). Learn has evolved from that original vision, and Training Team does help with scoping areas beyond lesson plans. The training team is in discussion on the mission statement of the Training Team, and what the team can grow into.

Current work in progress

    2. Testing a Trac ticket or a Github PR
    3. Trial run on a lesson plan and workshop about overcoming Imposter Syndrome by @lepittenger as part of Web Dev Studios 5FTF to be included in the speaker series.

    3. How to create a blog post in WordPress 5.x
    4. Using a browser inspector
    5. What to do when you forget your password

A few of these @courane01 will take on as they are self-serving for onboarding folks to training/release-comms/docs teams.  @Lu has begun some work on the creating a blog post. If anyone would like to especially get started creating a lesson plan, Forgetting Your Password would be a great one to pick up

Proposal to expand the mission of the Training team

When the Training team got started in 2013, it was invited to help WordPress education grow at scale, by creating and distributing world-class lesson plans that anyone could use to teach WordPress and WordPress-related skills. 

Since that beginning, lots of great work has been done. The result is an impressive repository of lesson plans and the site learn.wordpress.org itself. Those lesson plans provide an empowering framework for educating others in live settings — and even help new contributors develop their voice and expertise through workshops, MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for �?WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. events, and other opportunities for speaking. The team has a lot to be proud of, and a bright future ahead. 

When the team started, the mission was defined this way:

The WordPress training team creates downloadable lesson plans and related materials for instructors to use in live environments.

Learn WordPress has grown considerably since launch, and is well-positioned to accelerate the growth of WordPress by helping people learn to use, extend, and contribute to our open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. CMS. In that same time, the Training team has also grown and adapted.

To expand and improve the instructional content for all users of WordPress, learn.wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ needs contributors with experience in (or passion for) instructional design, discussion group facilitation, learning assessment, and many other aspects of learning or training. 

I propose expanding the mission of the Training Team to include more of that work, focused on the effort to make learn.wordpress.org a high quality, up-to-date WordPress learning platform — much of which the team has already been doing. 

The new mission statement could be something like:

The WordPress training team helps people learn to use, extend, and contribute to WordPress through synchronous and asynchronous learning as well as downloadable lesson plans for instructors to use in live environments, via learn.wordpress.org.

Feedback requested

  • @nao shared a recap of the current workshop vetting process and some suggestions for improvement.
  • There’s also a post to review and add new suggestions to the workshop Content Wishlist.
  • Using a form that populates the spreadsheet may make it easier for folks to add new ideas to the Content Wishlist.
  • Suggesting distinct workshop topics – and recording each topic separately – will help with updating videos in the future, especially for keeping the UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think �?what they are doing’ and less about how they do it. up-to-date in screen recordings.
  • TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. is a good option for tracking updates to workshops that are in progress.
  • Using a posts or pages to track, as well, may be more accessible since it doesn’t require a new tool.

Contributor roles

  • From the March 2021 sprint Team Functionality Goals, @courane01, @azhiyadev, @evarlese, and @andreamiddleton have drafted a contributor ladder that includes contributor roles for the Training team and the Learn WordPress Working Group (based on Observations on WordPress Contributor Team Structure).
  • Those will be included in both the Training and Learn WordPress team Handbooks.
  • Identifying team roles also helps to identify access and permissions needed for any custom user roles for the Learn WordPress site.
  • Part of identifying custom user roles is to try to identify ways to acknowledge contributions, i.e. badges – especially if some of these can be automated.
  • For next steps, @azhiyadev and @evarlese are going to work on a proposal to scope user roles and permissions based on the team roles.

Open discussion

  • @courane01 shared an overview of work she’s been doing to scope WordPress developer education, including programming languages and familiarity.
  • She’s working towards formatting it into a flowchat/map in the future that can be used as a resource by the Training team and others.

March Sprint 

 March Sprint details what the team is working on this month. Currently, the training team is accepting contributors to adopt a lesson plan and @azhiyadev been working on the Training Handbook.

@courane01 is reading the doc’s new style guide to see which part can be implemented into the training team’s style guides.
@cousett volunteered to help out with the research part on proposed lessons.
@courane01 mentioned training team’s plan is to create the quality of the screenshots. This will help the training team to move it along as proposed videos to train others in the process.

Slides plugin: A proposal is due, The main concerns are around maintainability and ease of content updates. If someone has anything they would like to add then please follow the conversation on https://github.com/WordPress/learn/issues/127#issuecomment-791417404

The Learn Working Group is an excellent resource for progress on Learn WordPress functionality goals.

It is an ongoing process and will continue to be updated as the need arises. The Training Handbook draft will be finished this week. The training team is still in discussions with regard to Brand Guidelines and hope to have something published for feedback by the end of the month.

Tracy gave some really great UX feedback via video recording and will convert to notes.

February sprint check-in:

Reusable Blocks and BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Directory – has been reviewed by @ashiquzzaman, and @paaljoachim also provided his feedback on Reusable Blocks. The lesson plan is ready to publish.

How to Configure WordPress installation for Contributor and Developer Testing isn’t ready for review. But @courane01 did most of the work and is almost ready to mark it as a done task. @paaljoachim provided his feedback and also commented that a developer should run through the doc for a technical spin.

@courtney01 also voiced her opinion about – some of the pending lessons to publish need to link internally at each other. During the publishing process, connect those in the related resources.

The team agreed to work on a joint proposal with Workshops/Community. @evarlese is planning to publish the agenda after this meeting.

March Sprint Meeting:

@courane01 has drafted a proposal for the team to review. She also commented last time the team started the sprint with a big list from @erica, this can be implemented for the March sprint as well. This will help the training team to be more organized.

We’ve been rolling along with the agenda posts keeping track of the sprint, but I remember @erica kicking us off with a big list before Learn launched that we used strikethrough text on.11:27I loved that approach. So the proposed sprint breaks down into a few areas and is welcome to include the Learn Working Group focus as well.

The lesson plan suggestion is one that will help us internally, as well as a few other teams. Setting the topic to be screenshots and video guidelines would help standardize the quality of media that appears on Learn, and grow into some videos and quizzes potentially. The training team can later turn those suggestions into TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. Learn WordPress Handbook

  • @camikaos hosted a sprint for the Learn WordPress Handbook last week.
  • The sprint focused on reviewing the existing Handbook drafts and adding in/making edits based on feedback.
  • For next steps, there is still a need for additional contributors to review and add any suggestions or edit to the draft Handbook pages.
    • For access to the Google doc to review and comment on the draft, please ask in the #training channel.
  • From the sprint, one item to be decided is where the Handbook should live: on the Make/Training team blog (this site) or in Learn WordPress itself.

  • Some Design team members have left feedback on the Review/Feedback Request: UX for learn.wordpress.org with suggested changes and/or improvements. Those include:
    • Making changes to the text on the home page, especially to clarify workshops and lesson plans.
    • Organizing content around topics and categories for both lesson plans and workshops in a unified way.
    • Revising the home page layout to highlight calls to action/content types differently.
  • @paaljoachim shared some additional thoughts/feedback on the terminology for workshops, as well, and plans to brainstorm some thoughts around definitions.
  • As a next step, the idea is to write up a proposal/post for the team to review and discuss the text on the home page, whether to make changes, and review how that aligns with Learn WordPress’ goals and mission.
