Of Their Nature

This collection highlights the artists common interest in natural motifs and the variety and vitality they encompass. These artworks are part of the collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Kiki Smith
A sculptor and printmaker, Kiki Smith uses a broad array of materials for her work, from bronzer and papier-mache to clay and thread. Inspired by the body, surrealism, fairy tales, flora and fauna, she frequently explores mortality, and humankind's connection to the natural world.

Frida Kahlo
Known for works of intimate scale and subject matter, Kahlo turned to painting in 1925 after a devastating accident. She created portraits and self-portraits that intertwine realism with fantasy, are rooted in pain, and take inspiration from her surroundings in Mexico.

Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois focused on painting and printmaking early in her career, turning to sculpture in the mid-1940s. Probing themes of motherhood, loneliness, anger and fear, her work engages a wide variety of form, material and scale, veering between abstraction and figuration, often referencing flora, fauna and the natural world.
