Subject: Final Exam Schedule Spring 2021

Dear Chairs, Schedulers, and Coordinators,

With most of our classes being taught remotely, this term’s final exam schedule will be similar to the fall 2020 final exam schedule.  I ask that you kindly share this information with your faculty.

According to the academic calendar set by the University, the spring term began on Friday, January 29, 2021 and the last day of regular classes will be Monday, May 17, 2021. The final exam period will be May 18 through May 25, 2021.

Departmental Final exams (exams which combine sections of a class and/or which need longer than regular class period to administer):

  • Tuesday, May 18: departmental final exams for BIO/CSC only
  • Tuesday May 25: departmental final exams for CHM only
  • Thursday May 20: departmental final exams for MTH given during Club Hours only (2:30-4:20pm)

Regular Final exams:

  • Wednesday, May 19: final exams for Monday/Wednesday classes and all Wednesday-only classes
  • Thursday, May 20: final exams for all Tuesday/Thursday classes and all Thursday-only classes
  • Friday, May 21: final exams for all Friday-only classes
  • Saturday, May 22: final exams for all Saturday-only classes
  • Sunday, May 23: final exams for all Sunday-only classes
  • Monday, May 24: final exams for all Monday/Wednesday classes and all Monday-only classes
  • Tuesday, May 25: final exams for all Tuesday-only classes

To avoid conflicts, regular final exams for all synchronous classes (which include time patterns in CUNY first) are to be given during their regularly scheduled meeting time, following the schedule above.

Since asynchronous classes do not have scheduled meeting times, final exam arrangements for non-departmental exams may vary.

The full academic calendar with all dates and deadlines can be found online.

If you have any questions regarding the final exam schedule, please contact Susan Massara at [email protected].

Best,

Susan

Deadline Tomorrow – Mindset Mini-Course for Faculty, Staff, and Administrators

Please see the below opportunity from CUNY. If you are interested in participating, please be reminded that the deadline for submitting the application form is the end of the day tomorrow, Friday, May 14.

By Ralf M. Peetz, PhD

In June 2021, CUNY Central OAA’s Innovative Pedagogy Team will offer a mindset mini-course for 200 faculty, staff, and administrators at all CUNY schools. This is an introduction to the Mindset GPS (Growth mindset, Purpose & Relevance, & Sense of Belonging) model developed by the University of Virginia’s Motivate Lab. The discussion portion of the course will be facilitated by six CUNY Mindset Fellows who have been chosen based on their experience with learning mindsets. All CUNY faculty, staff, and administrators are welcome to apply, so feel free to forward to your colleagues.

Course Dates/Hours:

A live kick-off meeting is Friday, June 11 at 11:00am to noon. This meeting will be recorded for those unable to attend. The rest of the course is asynchronous, to be completed by Monday, June 21, 2021. The entire course assignments should take approximately two to three hours. See the online flyer for more course information.

Tasks and Compensation:

Each participant is required to

 * participate in the course and complete all assignments between June 11 and 21, 2021.

 * complete pre- and post-course surveys.

As a result of successful completion of the above tasks, all participants will receive a certificate of completion, and the faculty participants will receive $200 summer salary.

How to Apply:

If you are interested in participating in the course, please submit this form by the end of Friday, May 14. You will be notified whether or not you are selected to participate in the course by Friday, May 21.

If you have any questions not answered here, please email us at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you.

Returning to In-person Work

As we move closer to the reopening of our City and State and New York’s massive vaccination program continues, my office has made the careful decision to mark the week of Monday, Aug. 2 as the date for staff to return to their workplaces in preparation for a more in-person fall. Faculty will follow in accordance with the academic calendar of their campus.

The return to in-person work will be guided by the University’s safety-first approach, which includes a blended scheduling system combining remote and in-person arrangements. Full details of our flexible work guidelines and how to request reasonable accommodations are available online. These guidelines were adopted during the pandemic and continue to be in effect.

As we carefully and gradually build to a greater in-person presence throughout the University, remote work arrangements will continue to play an important role in the strategic return of a post-COVID-19 CUNY. Delivering the news now gives each of you and your supervisors the time needed — nearly three months — to determine the logistical details surrounding your return, and to develop a framework for ongoing telecommuting arrangements.

The well-being of every member of the University community continues to govern our decision-making in every respect. Rigorous reopening guidelines created by the Central Office and each CUNY campus last summer are being updated in consultation with University stakeholders for Fall 2021 and will continue to cover a range of scenarios and include contingency plans in case we need to make adjustments to address sudden changes in circumstances.

To ensure a successful and safe return, I strongly urge each of you to get vaccinated. As I’m sure you are aware, Governor Cuomo announced this week that all CUNY and SUNY students will be required to be vaccinated to attend in-person classes in the fall. That mandate does not include faculty and staff but getting vaccinated is the most important step that each of us can take to protect our collective safety moving forward.

I am proud that CUNY has been at the forefront of the State and City’s efforts to get all New Yorkers vaccinated. Five CUNY campuses are serving as vaccination sites. Our VAXUpCUNY page contains a wealth of helpful information. I would also encourage you to sign up for the New York State Excelsior Pass, which will provide one convenient way to show proof of vaccination or a negative test for people who got vaccinated in New York State. As we get closer to fall reopening, and after consultation with key stakeholders, I will provide additional information regarding proof of vaccination status and testing protocols for campuses and offices.

Before I close, I want to acknowledge the work of hundreds of CUNY public safety officers, building maintenance staff, in-person faculty, staff, and administrators who have worked physically in campuses and offices throughout the pandemic. Your commitment to the sustenance of this University has been nothing short of heroic.

As I’ve said before, CUNY is playing an integral role in New York City’s recovery, and the return to our campuses marks an important milestone of that journey. I look forward to the time when CUNY faculty and staff rejoin students throughout the boroughs in a beautiful campus mosaic that will restore the energy and activity to our offices and classrooms.

Thank you again for your commitment and diligence.

2021 TEHA STEM for All Video Showcase Available for Viewing through May 18

The 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase of the Teacher Education Honors Academy at the College of Staten Island is available for viewing online from now until Tuesday, May 18.

The Teacher Education Honors Academy at CSI has had grant funding from the National Science Foundation since 2009. There are 40 CSI Noyce graduates teaching mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics in 14 high-needs high schools and three high-needs middle schools—almost all on Staten Island. Tenure has been awarded to 100% of eligible Noyce graduates. The retention rate after two years of teaching is 97%, which is significant when compared to the national average of STEM teacher retention of less than 50%. One factor that has contributed to this high retention rate is the host school internship program and that is what this video highlights.

To view a three-minute video on “5 Steps to Effective Partnerships,” please go online.
