The Television Academy, based in the NoHo Arts District in North Hollywood, California, is a nonprofit organization devoted to celebrating and empowering storytellers to push the boundaries of what Television can be. The only major organization fully representing the television and broadband screen entertainment industry, it is made up of nearly 20,000 members, representing 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors and various other artisans, technicians and executives.

The Television Academy recognizes excellence among its peers with the Emmy award, culminating in the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast each fall. The Television Academy also produces several other awards shows and a variety of activities and events for its members throughout the year. These events are featured across the Academy's digital platforms and in its award-winning emmy magazine.

Established in 1959 as the charitable arm of the Television Academy, the Television Academy Foundation is dedicated to preserving the legacy of television while educating and inspiring those who will shape its future. Through renowned educational and outreach programs, such as The Interviews: An Oral History of Television Project, College Television Awards, Student Internship Program and Faculty Seminar: The Conference, the Foundation seeks to widen the circle of voices our industry represents and to create more opportunity for television to reflect all of society. Chief Advancement Officer, Foundation

The Chief Advancement Officer is responsible for the planning, development and execution of all Television Academy Foundation fundraising strategies and initiatives. This role will be a trusted counselor and partner to the Foundation’s executive staff, leading the development team which currently consists of two direct reports.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Foundation, the successful candidate will oversee both corporate and major gift fundraising and foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization. The CAO will lead staff and volunteers to strengthen philanthropy and fundraising; maintain, manage, and grow industry partnerships; and develop endowment and preservation funds for the long-term health of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and execute an advancement strategy and timeline in accordance with the Foundation’s annual goals.
  • Maintain and build long-term partnerships and philanthropic investments from a wide variety of sources, including corporations, foundations, and individuals, to benefit the Foundation and all of its programs.
  • Assist the Board and Executive Director with long-range strategic planning, and partner with the Board so that it can become a stronger fundraising entity.
  • Identify potential donors with the capacity to make major gifts of $10,000 and above and qualify those prospects to confirm capacity and inclination to support the Foundation.
  • Cultivate prospects through tailored, personal outreach and donor-centered strategies, assigning portfolios and creating strategy memos for each prospect that includes short- and long-term objectives.
  • Solicit gifts for specific amounts and purposes that reflect the cultivation strategy and represent personally significant or stretch commitments.
  • Steward donors through continued personal interaction that demonstrates the impact of their gifts.
  • Work with Academy and Foundation staff to develop sponsorship packages attractive to prospective funders.
  • Develops and oversees both Power of TV and annual Golf Classic events which generate revenue for the Foundation, in addition to reaching fundraising goals for the annual College Television Awards and Summit, the Faculty Seminar and quarterly online auctions.
  • Collaborates with and assists program staff to achieve programmatic and fundraising goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Foundation and the Television Academy’s marketing, publications, activities, and digital departments to ensure cross-promotion opportunities.
  • Oversee all fundraising databases and systems, as well as the development and maintenance of all donor and prospect research and records.
  • Cultivate and manage fundraising team.
  • Create and maintain fundraising administrative protocols and maintain accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
  • Plan and administer the fundraising budget.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Development/Fundraising: Proven track record in cultivating new donors for a medium-sized nonprofit. Strong knowledge of advancement best practices and corporate social responsibility.
  • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development efforts, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones. Actively conceptualizes new opportunities for donors to engage with the organization.
  • Communications: Skilled in creating compelling written and oral fundraising pitches. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences.
  • Influencing: Uses compelling, convincing arguments to sell ideas, creates win-win situations and responds appropriately to key stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives.
  • Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with broadband media, Internet formats, and Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge/Raiser’s NXT or similar donor database management software.
  • Familiarity with the television industry, media corporations and corporate social responsibility trends.
