Subaru is reviving the classic blue-with-gold-wheels colour scheme from its World Rally Team cars of the 1990s and 2000s.

“For a generation of rally fans, Subaru is synonymous with blue cars, gold wheels and the iconic star cluster,” Vice-President of Marketing for Subaru of America Alan Bethke says.

“This new design pays tribute to that heritage while looking ahead to future success under the Subaru Motorsports name.”

The new-old colour scheme is a WR Blue Pearl base with gold wheels; and a bright yellow “Comet” graphic that is larger than previous models. This design pays tribute to the World Rally Championship-winning Imprezas of Richard Burns and Petter Solberg.

Large STI logos also adorn the front intakes, as well as the rear wing and trunk lid.

Changes are also being made to Subaru’s motorsports activities, with events in the U.S. now including stage rally, rallycross, record attempts, off-road racing and circuit racing.

Since 2001, Subaru has been involved in stage rally, and under the new Subaru Motorsports name will continue to expand into more racing disciplines to show off its Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The new design will be shown on a 2019 Subaru WRX STI in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show.
