Sony Digital Shotgun Microphone

Eight high-performance mic capsules and advanced digital signal processing provide three selectable directivity patterns in one compact microphone of approximately 99.3mm (4 inches) in length with Super-directional pick up. When connected to the Alpha 7R IV via its Multi Interface Shoe with digital audio interface support, audio is directly transferred to the camera in digital form so that the highest possible quality is achieved without noise or degradation.

if you order this Microphone, be aware! The amazon website shows compatible cameras, and since i have a RX10 Mk IV, and the Amazon website says its compatible, be aware: Only Partially.
Mine arrived today, I was eager to give it a try, go out and video with digital sound.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I turned the camera on, A Message flashed on the Screen: "Device Incompatible"

What? Huh? Its a Sony Microphone it fits my camera, its compatible according to the Amazon Description.

So after lamenting the waste of over $300, I went to the Sony Products Page. Searched for the RX10 Mk IV. Compatible Products. ECM-B1M Digital Microphone.

And what I discovered: It says only Partially Compatible.

Oh No!

So i clicked on a handy tab that said 'more info'

And it instructed me to : "Switch to Analog"

Well I did. And it worked. But it sucked. I had to turn it up manually to full volume to hear it in my earphones. Heck, I can get that sound with a $60 off brand mike.

Sending it back, dont need a $300 mike that only does Analog.

Amazon, its ok, you have a great return policy so I will be Ok....

Initial impressions on the ECM-B1M shotgun mic for the A7R IV

Quite pleased with the results out of the box. The ECM-B1M couldn't be simpler to use. Just stick it on the A7R4, select digital, your coverage area and sensitivity depending on distance. No batteries to fail, cables to lose or camera settings to fiddle with -- the camera automatically senses the microphone on A7R4.

Voice audio is Job One for shotgun mikes and at 8-10 feet with 0 db setting, the voices were sparkling clear with solid db levels. Compared with my Rode VideoMic Pro, the Sony is far more convenient on the A7R4, more compact and much sturdier, performs analog to digital conversion within the mic, and sounds better to my ears out of the box.

I have not tried the Sony dead cat, which is included along with a carrying case that holds only the microphone. The ECM-B1M is pricey, but really convenient for on-camera audio.

Great travel microphone for the 7c

I have this on my 7c video set up. What's great about this mic is how compact it its. It's compact b/c it's tiny, much smaller than my videomic pro. It also draws power from y 7c so no worries about another battery. And it requires no additional cable to work with the 7c. Sound and noice rejection is great. To my ears it's just as good as my videomic pro. Would highly recommend for 7c users wanting a great sounding mic in the tiniest set up possible.

I downgraded to 3 stars and likely will return b/c I do notice that the shock mount is very poorly designed. It makes an audible bumping noise when there's any movements what so ever. Too bad. I really wanted to like it.

It’s an OK mic. I don’t know why there are so many raving reviews about it.
Good: low wind noise, small, noise filters work well

Bad: the damn thing bottoms out the suspension every time you wiggle!! Click clack click clack click clack.
Also sound quality seems shallow, and white noise is acceptable but not great. I was using it on an a7iii so not digital.

There's no way around how badly the shock mount performs. What a shame. It's such a great form factor, the directional choices work well, and the lack of wires is awesome but it fails at the most basic task, recording clean audio while moving around. No matter how steady you hold this, you're going to hear bangs and clicks from the shock mount. This is so close to being a great product but for this price, it's just not acceptable. The shock mount is so bad that it's borderline defective.

I'm a freelance videographer and mostly do weddings and small bussines promos. I use Sony a7iii and imagine this, my mic jack died on me. Manufacturer warranty expired. The only option was to send it to California (I live in Illinois) to get it fixed for about $300-400 and 2 weeks time frame. Then I found THIS! Hot shoe connection and no cables, genius! Used it ever since. Sound quality is great. The only issue is when you record while moving around you will get a clicking noise because of the mount.

You have to use low cut filter to avoid handling noise. Without filter you can’t touch the camera. Tiny movement gets into the audio. Sound quality is really good but you have to use filter or don’t touch the camera. Also the price is too high for what it is ! Still keeping it though
