MLB falls out favor with Republicans

MLB is the latest sports league to fall out of favor with Republicans following its decision to pull the All-Star Game out of Atlanta.

By the numbers: In mid-March, MLB's net favorability rating among Republicans was 47%, the highest of the four major U.S. sports leagues. Since then, it has plummeted to 12%, dropping the league below the NFL and NHL, according to new data from Morning Consult.

The Minnesota Twins postponed Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox out of respect for the "tragic events" surrounding the police shooting of a 20-year-old Black man on Sunday.

Why it matters: Daunte Wright's death, about 10 miles from the scene of George Floyd's killing, has sparked outcry and reignited Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality.

Alex Rodriguez finalizing deal to buy Minnesota Timberwolves

Alex Rodriguez and e-commerce billionaire Marc Lore have signed a letter of intent to purchase the NBA's Timberwolves and WNBA's Lynx from majority owner Glen Taylor.

Details: The price is expected to be in the $1.5 billion range, per ESPN. Taylor will maintain full control of both teams for two more years, before Rodriguez and Lore take over in 2023.

Nike suspends Deshaun Watson endorsement deal amid allegations, lawsuits

Nike on Wednesday suspended its endorsement deal with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who faces multiple lawsuits and criminal complaints alleging sexual assault and harassment.

Why it matters: 22 women have filed civil lawsuits against Watson, accusing the athlete of sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. Two of the women went public on Tuesday for the first time detailing their allegations.

28.3% of MLB players were born outside the U.S., according to the league's annual report. That's down slightly from a record 29.8% in 2017.

By the numbers: There were 256 such players of the 906 total on Opening Day rosters, injured lists, the restricted list and the paternity list.

Deshaun Watson, already facing 21 civil lawsuits from massage therapists accusing him of sexual misconduct, is also now under criminal investigation by the Houston Police Department.

Catch up quick: The first lawsuit was brought against Watson on March 16. By March 31, the number had grown to 21, with all accusers seeking monetary damages for alleged incidents that took place between March 2020 and March 2021.

Obama applauds MLB for "taking a stand" against Georgia's voting restrictions

Former President Obama on Saturday praised Major League Baseball for moving its All-Star Game out of Atlanta due to Georgia's new law curbing voting access.

What he's saying: "Congratulations to @MLB for taking a stand on behalf of voting rights for all citizens," Obama tweeted. "There’s no better way for America’s pastime to honor the great Hank Aaron, who always led by example."

Trump calls for MLB boycott after All-Star Game moves out of Georgia

Former President Trump late Friday night called for a boycott of Major League Baseball after the league's commissioner announced plans to move its All-Star Game out of Georgia due to the state's new law curbing voting access.

What he's saying: "Baseball is already losing tremendous numbers of fans, and now they leave Atlanta with their All-Star Game because they are afraid of the Radical Left Democrats who do not want voter I.D., which is desperately needed, to have anything to do with our elections," Trump said in a statement.
