I had made my decision on this contractor based upon ratings on Angie's List, and we purchased a Big Deal to fund a portion of the job. We had a lot of potential jobs to do, and Dennis came out to give us pricing for the various options we had in front of us. After discussing, my wife and I decided to focus on remodeling our master bedroom. This particular job involved patching and rewiring where a wall had been removed, removing a door and closing in a closet, adding a wall and relocating a door for a new walk-in closet, and adding recessed lighting and a ceiling fan. Dennis believed that it would cost a bit extra above what we paid for the Big Deal since it would require additional men on the job, but that they could get it finished within about a week. The initial work seemed to go rather quickly and we were pleased with both the progress and the team. Two guys seemed to do the majority of the work, while Dennis came in and worked on more complicated elements like wiring, etc. Unfortunately, everything slowed down as I understand one member of the team was "let go" and the manpower dropped off. It now looked as if the job would take significantly more than a week. Nevertheless, I asked Dennis if his team could stay on to do some additional work by adding crown moulding and renovating an additional bedroom. He agreed and we settled on a price. As the job continued, everything seemed to take twice as long as anticipated. Nevertheless, we were assured that things would wrap up. I became a little worried about the quality of the work as they appeared to be rushing and overlooking a lot of the details. Still, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. On the final day, it still looked like a lot of detail work needed to be done. The painting looked uneven, and there were clear ripples and ridges in the drywall. I would have chalked that up to the uneveness of our existing walls, but even the brand new wall seemed to need a lot of work. I assumed the team would have a chance to fix all this and would do so. The last remaining worker was clearly rushing to get out the door despite a lot of elements needing to be fixed. I was surprised that they wanted to wrap up even though all sorts of things looked unfinished. They ended up leaving, and when I inspected the work, I was not pleasantly surprised. In the master bedroom, the door they relocated would not latch at all, walls had large and very visible ridges and bumps, the trim painting was extremely sloppy and uneven with drips and smears, bases were installed over paper and tape which they ripped up leaving jagged edges, drywall mud was dropped and dried on our hardwood floors, caulk was not smoothed and dried with peaks, and switchplates and outlet covers were either missing or hastily installed crooked. In the other bedroom, similar issued existed, but even the prehung door would not close and was VERY crooked, only one corner of the crown moulding of the four in the room met correctly, while the other three were very crooked and in some instances filled with over a half-inch of caulk. Only one switchplate and one outlet cover was installed. I called Dennis to ask if his team was really done, since I honestly believed that no one would leave a job in this condition. He stated yes, and when I told him I was surprised since there seemed to be a lot of issues, he curtly replied "such as..." I then went down the list. He agreed to meet and go over the issues, and was mostly silent, but told me that his guy would come out to fix everything. It should only take a day. Of course, it stretched on much longer, and frankly, saw that things would only improve to a point. Many of the larger issues were fixed, but still, the work was still of not particularly high quality with little attention to detail. Despite a bit more work to be done, I told the worker that he could just leave it. I would try to handle the rest. I'm sure that Dennis does great work himself, but we did not really have him involved a lot in this job. I admit that I'm detail oriented, but even several contractors who have come in after have shaken their head at the quality of the work at ALL levels. In fact, we just discovered that a huge gap in the wall was left above the prehung door that they installed crooked and then repaired. I'm sad to say that we would neither recommend his team nor use him again. I just cannot trust that the work will be of high quality without a lot of follow up, correction, or time on all parties part.
